Driver stuck in an infinite loop

Featured Replies

Hi,I am getting a BSOD with the above message and nv4_display.dll as the culprit. I just replaced my 2Gb Corsair RAM with 4Gb Adata RAM (couldn't get Corsair!) and a Gainward GTX 460 instead of my trusty old 9800GT. I've read what I could find about the above message and there seems to be no definite solution. Some facts:- VGA mode is working so I assume it is neither the card not the RAM to blame- I have a 700w power supply- Intel dp455g mobo- plenty of ventilation (a huge Zalman mounted on the C2D 8500 CPU)- everything is clean inside- tried both drivers, the one supplied with my Gainward GTX 460 and the new official nVidia 258.96- nothing is overclocked, been running this rig for over a year without a hitch; it is a pure FS9 machine without all sorts of trash - Win XP SP 3- no virus!- no APIC "stuff" in BIOSToday I'll run a check on RAM and HD's (two Hitachi SATA drives)Any ideas? I was really looking forward to the new card and now this.... :Hypnotized:Thanks in advance!Regards,Jure

I'm betting some part of the old drivers for the 9800 is still lurking around.0. Obtain and install Driver Sweeper (available at www.guru3d.com)1. Delete the nVidia video drivers (including the PhysX and Stereo 3D drivers if installed) using the Control Panel "Add and Remove programs"2. Delete the C:\nVidia directory3. Reboot the machine into safe mode (hold F8 key down during boot)4. Run Driver Sweeper to remove any lingering remnants of the nVidia drivers5. Reboot and do not permit Windows to search for a new driver when it asks.6. Turn off your antivirus temporarily7. Load new nVidia driver (32-bit version)8. RebootRegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

Bob, I hope you are right, although I did everything you wrote except deleting nVidia directory. I'll go through the procedure once again, just to be sure. Thanks!Regards,Jure

Of course the standard stuff applies...pull out the board, look for dirt or foreign objects in the slot and lightly rub the card edge contacts with a clean pencil eraser. Reseat the board, make sure the 6/8-pin power supply cables are snug, etc.If that doesn't do it, I'd check for a BIOS update for the motherboard, and try to get a look at the voltages on the 12v rail(s), especially if that 700W PSU is not a single-rail unit. If the voltages are being pulled lower than 11.8v I'd recommend a bigger and/or single-rail PSU. If all that fails, I'd consider an RMA on the video card...could just be the unlucky case of infant mortality on the board.Good luck!Bob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

Bob, this is VERY useful advice, thank you again. I will put what you wrote into my notes. I have checked RAM and HDs today and all seems to be well. I have already reseated the card and RAM, checked all connectors and power cables, checked for dirt and dust (I do that regularly). I will check the voltages, just to be sure. I did another thing, too. Caught a strange advice somewhere on the net and followed it:- uninstall the card in device manager (I just uninstalled the drivers)- reboot into safe mode, clean everything with DriverSweeper, etc.- reboot into VGA mode- install drivers (258.96)- Reboot normallyIt is working so far.... maybe too early to tell, but there was no screen corruption and/or failing to draw the screen while moving Windows Explorer window around. Did a full flight in FS9 and after five hours, the machine is still working without a glitch. Fingers crossed.... Now, what is so special about VGA mode? Do the drivers install differently? I have no clue....I guess it's the combination of everything I did. Thanks again, Bob!Regards,Jure

Interesting...I'm a little confused, because when you delete the drivers and reboot, that should be VGA mode. For my own edification, when you say you booted into "VGA mode" what do you mean?Deleting the card from device manager before rebooting into safe mode is a good idea that I will stash in my bag of tricks for future reference. Anyway, glad you've got it sorted and you're enjoying the new hardware!CheersBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

It's a sort of a legacy mode, methinks... this is a quote I found: "If you are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, there is another mode known as "VGA mode" which allows Windows to be fully functional except it uses a plain old VGA (circa 1987) video mode. You get into VGA mode the same way as safe mode except you select "Enable VGA Mode" rather than "Safe Mode" on the startup menu. If you are sure that your display adapter is the problem then use VGA mode rather than safe mode. If VGA mode cannot boot then you can try safe mode which almost always boots. "
Anyway, glad you've got it sorted and you're enjoying the new hardware!
Thanks! I really hope the problem is solved. This driver infinite loop isn't all that uncommon and the only solution I found repeatedly was - to wait for newer drivers! All other possibilities with faulty HW aside, it must be a combination of more factors that triggers this. Regards,Jure

I am now using Win Vista 32 bit."Reboot and do not permit Windows to search for a new driver when it asks."How do you do that?It installs a new driver rather quickly and doed not ask me about first!
