GTX 460 1 or 2 GB?

Featured Replies

In the early days of the *******-tweaks I read that a 2GB gpu wasn´t good if you´d implement the tweaks, and you should stick to 1GB. But as gpu development progresses, things may change, and I´d like to know if my assumption still applies. Lately I read about people SLI´ing the 480´s with no adverse effects on FSX. So, anyone got any experience with a 460 2GB edition? Will it benefit a triple widescreen setup (TH2G dig.)? This, if it makes a difference, is to be concidered on an i7 930 or higher setup.Any help appreciated.

Really no 2GB users out there? Guess I'll have to pioneer a little ;-)

Hello:I am also looking at a GTX 460 2GB edition. Is this really worth the extra $$ for better graphics or should I stick with the 1GB?Thanks!Airbus

Stick with 1GB. FSX is CPU intensive and you'll see no difference between the 2 cards. People only use multiple GTX480's because they use their computer for other games that are GPU intensive. Even then, a single GTX480 is enough. SLI 480's are only for extreme gamers.

2GB of Vram will make a difference when running in multi monitors. As FSX can eat up to 700MBs of Vram on a single monitor in dense scenery (E.g: PNW Seattle, VRS Bug.) Now times 3 monitors... You get the picture. Some stutters and perf hits are from Vram deprivation, which the stutter is from the Vram offloading data to the system memory, and the auto gen spikes are caused by the Vram being maxed out.

I know people who run TH2Go off of a single GTX480, and run their FSX extremely smooth.

The GTX480 has 1.5GB of Vram, just enough to beat the memory swap, where as the GTX460 only has 1GB of Vram and has a slower Shader Clock than the 480.

Fair enough. Well there you have it. You want mulitple monitors, get at least 1.5GB VRAM, single monitor, doesn't matter.

Installed a 1gb 460gtx yesterday and love it, but with a 4650 dual core the system is CPU bottle necked. Need to find a best "bang for the buck" Quad Core to complete the upgrade. Given all the data tossed around in the back ground, FSX is indeed, CPU intensive.
