FS9 in XP x32 & x64

Featured Replies

I have already spent SO many hours trying to set up FS9 in XP x64, but though I have drivers now and so on, results once FS9 is loaded up are so far rather disappointing. I read this in one forum:".. because you're running 64 bit your 32 bit application (FS9) isn't running natively and will thus not run quite as fast as if it were on a 32 bit PC."Do people agree with that? Having FS9 on XP x64 may stop any OoM errors, but it seems to me that the price to pay is a marked drop in frame rates. I have Aerosoft Heathrow and before (i.e. in XP 32-bit), even with 95% traffic I got workable frame rates on the ground - at least 15fps. In XP 64-bit they keep dropping to single figures, especially when panning around (gently!) in spot view, and a/c/ground textures can take for ever to load.Is this all because of the 64-bit OS? Other factors (hardware etc.) are the same. Frankly, I'd rather have the OoM errors if so: at least with AutoSave you can just restart FS9 and the flight. Are there any major differences between the fs9.cfg file in XP x32 & x64?Comments appreciated. Thanks,Martin

HelloNo difference here, if anything Xp64 seems quicker.Be sure to set it up exactly as Nick Needhams guide advises.

Yes, I will, thanks. Maybe I panicked a bit yesterday - seemed to be running better by by he time I gave up at 2.00am,

I have noticed very little difference in actual sim performance. I think perhaps it is a little quicker but then I moved to a faster PC at the same time so I don't know... The major thing is that I have had ZERO out-of-memory errors since starting with XPx64 (and patching FS9.exe of course). Even with the memory switch applied in XPx32 I still used to get some.Only problem with XPx64 as far as I see is that the graphics driver support for newer cards is not good. I tried a GTX480 but had to get rid of it again because I couldn't get it working. (this was ~5 months ago now so perhaps it's been solved)Geoff
