Installing FS in Windows 7

Featured Replies

I have spent two days installing FS9 in Windows 7 64-bit: an utter disaster.. I know some people say they have done so successfully, but I wonder if installing FS9 in a folder other than the Program Files x86 folder is a good idea, given it's an x86 programme? In addition to the following problem:http://forum.avsim.net/topic/301172-fs9-menu-bar-problem/I have a number of other serious issues - fs9.exe still appearing in Task manager after the programme has been closed, flickering/black screens on loading/changing aircraft etc. - FS9 failing to load at all in the end (maybe because FS9.exe was still in the task manager - I'm not sure now if it was or not). Whatever, I have just uninstalled the whole thing, a complete waste of two days work (I hope not money too - I have just spent a fortune on a new PC to run FS!).When I get over this first disappointment I suppose I'll try again. But maybe I should install into the default folder this time - if the drive (SSD 60GB) is big enough. Anyone any ideas what might have gone wrong? I installed according to David 'Opa' Marshall's earlier post, "Installing FS9 & FSX in Win 7 64-bit". I'm not going to be forced to go back to installing Windows XP 32-bit and the joys of OoMs after all this am I??Martin

Wish I could offer some advice Martin - but I can't. :( FS2004 runs perfectly for me in Win 7 as I stated in my post describing how I installed it.Hope you get it sorted out.

Hi David,Do you have the PMDG 747 or Level-D 767? I get the problem with both - seems it is with any a/c that installs a tab on the menu bar which you need to access for options (though default a/c are OK).Had a reply from PMDG on this. Apparently it is a known problem: as looks evident from what happens on the screen, it's an nVidia drivers issue. The workaround is to go into windowed mode, then back to full screen, but that always causes my second monitor to black out (even in XP I always had problems trying to get back to full screen from windowed mode - caused a CTD in XP), so that's not an option for me. So, not being willing to wait for a fix that may never come, I am going back to XP 64-bit for FS9. I'll set up a dual-boot, with Windows 7 for FSX, where I only fly the default a/c. That way I can get my beloved FSHotSFX back, which doesn't work in Windows 7 at all (assuming they sent me a new registration key!).Martin

No, it seems that with my new setup (as signature), XP64 and FS are going to have great problems - both are too old now to be properly supported by the new generation of hardware (like the nVidia GTX400s)/ Windows 7 combination. This is according to PMDG and googling this a bit it seems they are right. So I'll stick with Windows 7 - may have to fly PMDG & Level-D in window mode for now, which I don't like at all. Meanwhile my new PC won't boot and is going to have to be returned to the manufacturers for repair - only had it 5 days!! Wish I'd never started this now!! $£!!*%£!!! ...

Thanks for the link - I did have AC installed, yes. But today the PC gave up the ghost altogether and it's had to go back to be repaired. I only had it 4 days!!!!!M.
