That's interesting, is that a requirement set out by your airline? Can you just perform an autoland whenever you want to, or is that heavily frowned apon?

You will be told beforehand if the aircraft reqiures a autoland to stay certified, as far as the crew staying certified that can be done in a properly equipped sim.Crew want to hand fly as much as possible within reason, I'm not a real world commercial pilot but my old man is Capt on the 777 and if he's lucky he may get 1 or 2 landings a month on a roster, so you can understand why they want the automatics off whenever possible. Also keep in mind that it's type specific, if bstolle is Autolanding the real thing once or twice a month it sounds like he's flying shorthaul.Regards

Thanks for the info. Why so few landings? I would have presumed he would be PF every other flight?

You will have a CATIII entry in your license. This needs to stay current just like your IR, TR etc.

Yeah, if your old man is on the T7 he is obviously doing the longer hauls which usually don't even get a lot of flights per month, number wise. It happens not rarely that e. g. dual rated pilots on A330/A340 aircraft will eventually not get the required landings on type per month, so they need to visit the sim in order to do so. But might indeed be very airline, type, country and hence license specific. Most likely impossible to give a definate answer. But correct, like the first gentleman posted you will perform an approach according to CATIII even in VMC every once in a while since you simply can't have real CATIII conditions in many parts of the world often enough to force it. Exactly. Once you're on the long haulers and have a handful of flights every month, this is obviously about what you can expect to get.
