Confessions of a Flight Sim Horder

Featured Replies

There has been a lot of addons for FSX over the last few years. Some good, some not so good. In the beginning, I picked and chose just the planes and scenery I wanted to fly and left the rest behind. As time went by, a started buying stuff I really wasn't interested in. Eventually a started gbuying all addons, even if it was a plane I had no interest in. I would load it up once and never fly it again. The same for scenery. Id buy airport scenery for a part of the world I had no interest in. Eventually, My FSX directory got out of hand. Close to 300GB and growing! FSX would take over to 10 mins to start and sometimes crash while loading. When clicking on the aircrafdt button, to load a new plane, it would take no less than 5 mins for that to load and sometimes crash while loading a new plane. I would use FSX cringing that with each pause while loading scenery, FSX might crash. I always wanted an SSD drive to speed things up, but one that would hold 300gb of stuff is just way too expensive! Finally it crash completley and would not load the sim at all. I uninstalled everything. Cleaned out every last piece of FSX and all the addons from my hard drive and the registry. Defragged my hard drive and reinstalled FSX and just the 5 or 6 addons planes I flew and just the scenery addons I use. My fsx direectory is now a little over 66GBs and everything is running great! NOw crashes and it loads up much faster. FPS is of couse the same, but I was always satisfied with that (I have a high end PC). The best part is now, I can pick up an 80GB SSD drive without breaking the bank!Rob

It's good to talk eh? Now just make sure you keep going to the meetings! "Hi, my name is Rob and I'm an FSX junkie" :(

The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA

It get's pricey... ick - I don't buy every addon thankfully - only the ones I really like. There are some I don't fly anymore, but mainly that is because my hardware isn't super duper speedy.Ones I have but not installed:Aerosoft F16Aerosoft DHC6Pyro HelicopterLDS 767Super 80 ProCaptainsim C130 (never really liked the fde and sounds)Dreamfleet DakotaF1 PilatusMy primary five:Lotus L39F1 Citation MustangES Citation XRealAir DukeCarenado F33 Bonanzaother ones I fly often:RealAir Scout + SF260Ant's P2002 SierraEaglesoft SR22 CirrusPiglet's Zlin (freeware)Some I have that I wouldn't mind deleting:Carenado Seneca (still a poor fde imho)Carenado Arrow (too slow now that I have F33)Ant's Tiger Moth (too slow)A2A Piper Cub (waaaay too slow)Acceleration P51 + F18And I'll be adding the Orbx Lancair, Realair turbine Duke, and PMDG NGX to the keep list hopefully shortly :Big Grin:Oh, btw, FSX sometimes takes 10-15 minutes to load initially (from a clean boot), and sometimes the aircraft list will take approx 2 min to load if I have checked show all variations.
