Featured Replies

Hi guysI would like to ask your help for a possible videocard upgrade.my system is:Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.2GhzMotherboard: GA-MA790XT-UD4PMemory: PC3-10700H DDR3 3GBVideocard: ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MBOS: Windows XPThe question is ATI or Nvidia. WHich is better for FS9 or FSX have both. Also what would be best quality/price... dont want to get a very expensive card if the FPS gain is only little..Thanx

The general consensus is that whilst the hardware for both ATI AMD and nVidia are good, the ATI/AMD drivers suck for FSX, although there are some tweaks out there. nVidia seems to work just fine. Depends what else you use your PC for - if you're looking at bang for buck, the GTX460 is great but the AMD/ATI HD6870 has just come out. Similarly priced to the GTX460 but an extra 10% FPS in certain games (Dirt2, Metro 2033) at high resolutions (above 1920x1200).

+1Haven't owned an ATI card since the 80's because the drivers were such a pain then.jja

I'm using an ATI 5870. No issues, no tweaks, no driver problems. Runs great. You might want to look into the new AMD Radeon 6000 series cards that just came out yesterday. Good reviews, good prices for budget minded simmers.

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

It's silly because it costs the same as the GTX470 and doesn't perform as well *especially in FSX. Unless your using some really really big resolution.

The "issues" are that you cannot get near the same level of filtering IQ, various Vsync problems in setup and other issues that often crop up with new driver releases. Most of this due to the fact that - as they have stated - ATI will not even attempt to support FSX - not so with NV.

Not to mention that nVidia and MS have been in bed together for years.jja

But is planning - and buying - for FSX/FS9 really the most relevant question? With MS flight - and possiibly (though less certain) an Aerosoft FS - over the horizon, perhaps one should start planning for what is/may be to come.Perhaps the real question is - accepting the known unknowns as well as the unknown unknowns - what would be most likely to give a long(er) term benifit?

Past history may change in the future but it is probably the safest measure.

Who cares right now, you know nothing about it. GPUs change every 6 months it's irrelevant because of what things will look like later this year...
