October 28, 200322 yr Great Guide!Keep the updates to it coming! How bout adding a general Radeon and Nvidia tweak section?
October 28, 200322 yr Hi Guys,I sincerely appreciate your kudos. :D I am very happy to see that you like the document and some people consider it 'must-read'. Wow! There are some minor additions and changes I could make and I will try to get around to doing it within the next couple of weeks, but for the most part the doc is fairly complete.BoDEAN, I don't think that I could really add such a section. I only have a Radeon card and I only put in here how to set it up properly for use with FS2004 and that is about all I know. Although there might be some tweaks for it in the registy subkeys underlying the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlVideo key I don't hang out on www.rage3d.com forums and so I wouldn't know what they are. Thanks Again Guys, x:)~Jim
October 28, 200322 yr The link for the fssound.dll file is broken. FTP isnt upCan you provide another site to download the latest version of this file for use with FS9?
October 28, 200322 yr BoDean,Well, that is one of the things I need to change in the document. For one, it ended up that the newer beta version didn't work for me, at least not when I went it came to using it for POSKY's A320/330 planes. So I went back to using the 1.5.0.2 version, which was the last version released for FS2002. And I of course had to put the {OldModules} section back into my FS9.cfg file. The website has the 1.5.0.2 version on it if you are wanting it. Here's the link...http://fssound.hn.org/Jim
October 29, 200322 yr Jimmy,Thanks ;-)I've done some tweaking and felt rather fed up with all testing. But took a shot on two of your BIOS tweaks (the others done previously). I enabled Delayed Transaction and changed the PCI Latency Timer from 32 to 64. This added another 3-5 FPS.Ulf B
October 31, 200322 yr Obvious, there is a lack of engineering here...Boy I sure hope Microsoft releases the next version of Flight Simulator for the XBOX II...What a sheer waste of time! I'd rather be flying than tweaking my hardware!I wonder how many will be re-loading XP and FS 2004 when their whole system locks up and won't boot??:)Barry
November 12, 200322 yr Noticed since I edited my fs9.cfg sound area like you mentioned, I get a lot more "wind" noise on the ground. This normal?
November 12, 200322 yr I've asked this time and time again and not had an answer. HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN WITH THEIR OWN EYES FS USE MORE THAN HALF A GIG OF MEMORY?I have run a bunch of flights lately with the PMDG 737 - my most demanding aircraft - in real weather with FS genesis mesh. I have never once seen the memory useage go over half a gig - and I have a very small page file defined. Can someone please chime in? Time and time again everyone says you get a smoother experience with one gig. Don't see how that can be happening if the sim never uses more than half a gig. Thanks!
November 13, 200322 yr You have received an answer. I checked and saw 540k used (484k free). Why is this such a big deal to you?
November 13, 200322 yr Hi Jim,Thank you very much for your hard work. That will save me a lot of time for looking around.;)Cheers,Samim
November 13, 200322 yr Hello Colin,Can't even say that I have checked my memory usage. I have just gone by how the game reacted when I turned up my AGP Aperture size from 128 to 256 MB's. It was noticeably smoother(with my 128 MB frame buffer video card), and I am not the only one who has noticed this. Now, although perhaps not a total expert I consider myself to have a decent understanding of what the AGP Aperture setting does, and I don't think it would turn out to well if I only had 512 MB's of system RAM and and had my Aperture size at 256. In that case that would be allocating half the available system RAM for texture storage when that extra storage became deemed as needed. But, really what I would need is to hear from some folks who have 512 MB's of system RAM, set the size to 256, and then run the PMDG 737 with Virtual Cabin(VCCAB) chosen, which is in my opinion a good way to test it because as you said, it is the most demanding aircraft due to it's complexity and high quality texturing. And when using the Virtual Cabin (plus Virtual Cockpit) any extra available room for texture storage is good thing to have. With the 1 GB of RAM and the way I have my system set up, I don't have any problem with PMDG 737 VCCAB myself. I have all goodies checked And there are only three sliders I don't have maxed. Autogen is at very dense, Scenery Complexity is at very dense, and Terrain Mesh is at 85 percent. I run 1600x1200 resolution with 4x AA and 16x Quality AF. :) The only time I every get somewhat of a slowdown with my FPS performance is at very complex airports (it takes a TON of clouds for my sys to slow down). How much does having 1 GB of memeory help here in regards to setting the Aperture size to 256 and the resulting noticable improvement in smoothness? I'm not certain, but I'm thinking it does help. I could of course be wrong.Regards,Jim
November 13, 200322 yr "HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN WITH THEIR OWN EYES FS USE MORE THAN HALF A GIG OF MEMORY?"I've only checked once... 520Mb and 504Mb free. I use FS Genesis and FSMeteo. I have my AGP Aperature set to 256 (reduces the stutters to only occasional instances).AMD 3000+ Barton 400Mhz @ 2.4GhzASUS A7N8X Deluxe Rev. 2.0 1004 Uber BIOSATI 9700 Pro 350/330 Omega 2.4.96c1Gig Corsair XMS PC3200 6,3,3,2Maxtor 40 Gig 7200 ATA133Sony 52x24x52 CD-RWIomega 100Mb ZipTurtle Beach soundLian-Li PC82 w/ Antec TruePower 430WWinXP Home w/SP1
November 13, 200322 yr Hi,Thanks for your good advice! I'm a newby to FS2004 and was becoming fed up with the awful shimmering (nvidia card) to the point I was about to go back to FS2002, but your point about lowering the MIP Mapping setting fixed it.I'm also in the process of trying out several of your other suggestions.Best regards,Kurt
