FS2004 and WinXP Optimization Guide

Featured Replies

This is a LONG post!Hi All,Terblanche asked for a doc such as this and so I decided to do it for a few reasons. This doc does not really even have a LOT of FS2004 tweaks in it, but still, it's certainly not without them. A lot of people who already have their FS2004 tweaked won't find much new here if anything at all in the way of FS2004 specific tweaks. I am posting this here to see what folks think and was wondering if something like this is worth posting to the Avsim library. Comments are encouraged as I would like to use input to make any changes before posting to the library if folks think it should be posted there. I hope you enjoy!----------------------------------------------------------------------Hello and welcome to my FS2004 and Windows XP Tweaking Guide. Hopefully there will be some tips you find useful in here. I have doubts as to whether going through this guide will gain you much performance. But, if every little bit helps, then hey, it can

Hi Jim,Brilliant :)Yes, many will already be aware of and have implemented most of your recommendations, but it never hurts to review what you have done from time to time, as I now have. It's great to have this all summarized in one place. Copied and pasted!Thank you!Regards,Mike

Hi Jim,You did an excellent job with this post. It should be a "must" read. How about posting a copy of this in the "READ ME FIRST" topic.Ed

Hello Mike and Ed,Thanks a lot for the compliments Makes me feel good about the considerable amount of time I spent on making this doc! :)Ed,I considered posting this in the "READ ME FIRST!" topic. But, I didn't because of a couple of reasons, it is very long, and, it contains a several tweaks already posted in the topic. But if Ken Salter has a look at this and thinks it should be posted there I certainly don't have any problem with that at all. ;)Also, I want to mention, You don't need to copy and paste the Guide, you can download it by clicking on the attached .zip file at the bottom of the post. ;)Cheers!Jim

JimmyNow that's what I mean when I say ... DETAIL !!Many thanx. I will tackle them one by one.RegardsTerblanche

Thanks again Jim, great post!

Excellent post Jim. I hope AVSIM will move it to the FS Tips section so people can refer to it often.Jim Young

Thanks for the kudos guys. I REALLY appreciate it. :) I get the feeling a lot of people are making use of this and are liking what they find, which is what I hoped for. Here's a quick, and lacking in detail, explanation, and another tip. I think you guys might really like the tip! ;)In case you are wondering about the AGP Aperture. It's size setting does a few things, but one of which is control the amount of System RAM that can be allocated to the AGP graphics for texture storage. This is why if you have more RAM it's OK to turn it up higher. I thought that since I had a video card that has 128 MB's of it's own RAM onboard it that I would not see much gain from turning up my AGP aperture size from 128 to 256. But FS2004 is not your average game and I was wrong. It did not increase my framerate much if any, but what it did do is allow for a little bit smoother experience performance wise. The subject of 'Windows Messenger' and how to disable it came up on this forum recently. But I don't think there was an explantion of how to rip it's guts out and 'uninstall' it. Well, here's my method. First, disable the 'Messenger' Service, of course. Then run the following command in a command prompt. You can copy the command, and then Right-click with your mouse and select paste to paste it into the command prompt.rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %SystemRoot%INFmsmsgs.infEnjoy, :-waveJim
