November 1, 201015 yr Somehow I have screwed up my scenery in FSX while messing around with addon scenery. Now most of the airports which sit at any appreciable elevation are on plateaus. I have deleted all my addon scenery, but the problem remains. I think what happened is I installed some scenery that put new scenery and texture files in the default World Scenery, or something like that. I have run FSX Repair and Accelerator Repair, but they did not correct the problem. Of course I can do a new install of FSX, but I really don't want to do that as I have so many aircraft, FSUIPC, Active Sky, FSinn, TS, etc. that I would also have to reinstall. Is there anywhere I can find the default World Scenery files for FSX? I guess they are in my original discs, but how can I find them and install them to bring the scenery back to default? Thanks.
November 1, 201015 yr Sounds like you installed some revised mesh files. The first thing is to look for an uninstall option. Also check the FSX scenery library for something that looks suspicious and uncheck it .I think the default file names in the World folder begin with image_globe, dated 8/22/06, BNXWorld dated 7/18/06, bvcf dated 5/12/06 and lak dated 5/12/06. Other original files in the World folder are traffic. In any case, original files are dated 2006. Art
November 1, 201015 yr If an addon needs to change the elevation from the default altitude, it will generally include a small bgl file with the corrected elevation in the scenery\world\scenery folder. It's usually easy to find these just by looking at the file name, or you can use a scenery scanner tool like airport scanner or JABx to find them. In a default install, there aren't any airports defined in scenery\world\scenery so there isn't any harm disabling or deleting any that are found in that folder.scott s..
November 1, 201015 yr Best "guess" from the structure of a fairly new Acceleration install. The world 4km mesh in FSX\Scenery\Base\Scenery\dem4km.bglEach regional folder 0000 through 1107 FSX\Scenery\XXXX\scenery\demXXXX.bgl where the xxxx in the file is the same as the folder number.default creation/modified dates range from 5/12/06 to 8/26/06There also appears to be 5 Acceleration updated dem files dated 8/22/07: dem0604, dem0501, Brazil_Rio_dem, dem_BlackCanyon, and 0dem_StHelens.If you find any other "dem" files they might be suspect unless you know where they came from. "dem" is not essential in the name, so some addon could have included mesh without a 'dem' in the name. One thing for sure... any file dated later than the publication of Acceleration is not a default file. Use windows search feature, display in "detail" mode and look for any bgl in the FSX folder dated later than that.Loyd Hooked since FS4... now flying: FSX Acceleration on Win7/64, Core Duo E8400; GA-EP45-DS3R; GTX 460-768MB; 4G RAM; Freezer 7 Pro
November 2, 201015 yr Author I don't see any additional "dem" files and all shown have older dates. I can't actually open the bgl files, but thier dates are all older.I think I should just re install the default SCENERY files form FXS, but don't know how to do this as the only choices I have when I install disc 1 are REPAIR, or REMOVE. I have run REPAIR twice now in both FSX and FSX Accelleration, but this has not fixed the problem. How can I get to the default scenery files to copy?
November 2, 201015 yr I have run REPAIR twice now in both FSX and FSX Accelleration, but this has not fixed the problem. How can I get to the default scenery files to copy?I would conclude that if "Repair" didn't change anything, there is NO problem with the default files - repair should replace missing or corrupted files. You cannot COPY those files from the install disk and repair process shouldn't remove any file that wasn't part of the install process. My own approach would be to find the active scenery config files (and its backup) - locations vary on different OS/setup - copy them to a safe location, then substitute a copy of the default FSX\scenery.cfg - there is also a copy on the original disks that is accessible - and restart. If this fixes the problem, then there should be an entry in YOUR scenery config that would fix it also.If this didn't resolve the problem, my last ditch attempt would be to RENAME the main scenery folder and let REPAIR build me a complete new one.If this doesn't fix it, only then would I uninstall and start over. If it does fix it you could then compare the contents of the new and old folders to see what you had in the old folder that wasn't in the rebuilt one and start adding them back. You can also Google FSX filenames and see if there are references to them on line somewhere.Good luck.Loyd Hooked since FS4... now flying: FSX Acceleration on Win7/64, Core Duo E8400; GA-EP45-DS3R; GTX 460-768MB; 4G RAM; Freezer 7 Pro
November 3, 201015 yr Author Loyd,Thanks for your reply.I re named the SCENERY file and the scenery.cfg file in FSX and in my APPS section. Then did a REPAIR of both FSX and FSX ACCELERATION. This created a new default SCENERY and scenery.cfg file. I think the problem is gone. I have benn to several airports that were giving me the problem and everything seems normal. I have also made an IMAGE of the sim and a copy of the SCENERY and scenery.cfg just in case. Now I will start to slowly add back in my addon scenery items one at a time, making a backup copy of everything each time. Thanks for your help.Howard
