I need the Bendix King KLN 94 GPS for my Sims..

Featured Replies

Anyone knows.. if such a thing is available.. I want to learn to use the BendixKing KLN 94 GPS ... Is there anyway I can get a simulation for this and add to it to any of my FSim9 aircrafts? either in 2002 or 2004.Even if it is not the KLN 94...even for the earlier models.. It may be OK.. I am told that that As long as its the BendixKing GPS ...most functions should be similar.I wish the plane I train in had the Garmin GPS..but unfortunately it has the BendixKing...Thanks.Manny

Hi Manny,I have a KLN 94 sim at home that's stand alone, and has tutorials with it. But it doesn't interface with the FS sim though. is this what you're looking for?Bruce.

Hi Manny,I'll see if I still have the web site at home. I do have the file, but not sure of the file size, etc.I have used the GPS sim for my IR in real flying. Actually, it may be an 87B model, but if it is then it's very similar, as I recall it's just the cursor that's different, and the map [email protected]

Hi Manny,Yes- mine is the 89B too, and the website that Geof has is where I got this freeware version.I think I quoted the "87B" above, it's the 89B (as Geof has). I've found it very useful for learning the ins and outs of this version, and also the 94. The last place you want to be doing that is when you're up in the air :).Bruce.

Thanks Bruce,You are so kind.I did manage to find a PDF document (The user guide) for the Bendix94. I am assuming its the same thing.. If it is .. then.. Its OK..the PDF should suffice..right.But if you have a Tutorial or something like that..that would be very nice.:)thanks again..Bud.Manny

Hi Manny,I believe the best tutorial is the sim that Geof gave you the URL for. I'm not aware of the .pdf file. I have the manual for this product, which describes the functions (whereas the GPS sim has tutorials). If you would like a copy of the manual, just e-mail me your address. [email protected] original question (about a KLN94 in an FS a/c) is one that I have wished for since I've been flying the C172SP. With so many of these in the GA system now, and even being the default FS2002/2004 aircraft, one would assume that FS might have developed the KLN GPS line instead of the way they have gone with another GPS product (since Cessna have an OEM agreement with the KLN products). I can only assume it is a software licensing issue. Are you flying? Thanks,Bruce.

I have been in contact with B/K since mid-2002 about a KLN94B simulator - I was working on my instrument rating at the time and wanted to get to know the unit outside of the cockpit. They contracted with, uh, shall we say a major simulator vendor (not sure if I'm supposed to say who, but it isn't MS) and as far as I know they still haven't delivered it. If I understand it correctly it was going to be more than just the unit simulator - it was to be a limited-function (probably no out-the-window view?) flight simulator with the 94B in it. I bugged the B/K guy a few times over the months, the last time being probably five or six months ago, and he assured me that he would contact me when it was ready. I haven't heard from him since. Not sure what's up with that, but I am under the impression that it would've or will be an emulation of the unit rather than a PC-based wrapper containing actual unit software as the Garmin sims do.FWIW, I personally found the 94B to be harder/less intuitive to use than the Garmin GNS products. I ended up basically using it as a DME more than anything else during my training, rather than trying to use it in "overlay" mode for ILS/VOR/etc. approaches. It made the workload just too high for my brain to handle. A standalone sim would've probably made the difference for me but at the time I just wanted to get the rating over and done with 8^) .BTW the KLN89 simulator is pretty lame, and also my CFII said that the 89B is even harder to use for approaches than the 94B.Dave Blevins

Hi Dave, don't you think..its high time they standardize this? This GPS could get really good and precice for landing pretty soon.. its the future. They better put a rope on this sucker.. before every manufacturer goes on a tanget.

Wouldn't that be great - but on the other hand, it would prevent innovation. It actually gets a little worse - I had an opportunity to see the new UPS/Apollo (now GarminAT) CNX80 GPS/Nav/Comm in a side-by-side comparison to a GNS530 a few weeks ago. The CNX80 is an amazing box in many ways, and does some things that neither the B/K or Garmin ones will do, but it has a user interface that's all its own. It remains to be seen whether it's as user-friendly as the Garmin GNS units are - I would have to really learn the unit *and* use it in flight to know that. The thing that sets the CNX80 apart is that it's WAAS-enabled, and thus is ready-to-go for the better-than-non-precision approaches that are beginning to be implemented in (at least) the US. I won't go into detail here about all that - do a web search for "CNX80" for more - but the exec summary is that it will really open up new approach options for airports that don't have ILS or even VOR/LOC approaches. WAAS enables medium (and eventually, almost-ILS-like) precision appproaches to airports that don't have any co-located ILS or LOC/VOR equipment. The CNX80 has some other cool features, like having knowledge of low and high altitude airways in its database - they can become part of your flight plan which is handy. But, it was certificated under a different set of FAA rules than any previous GA unit (other than perhaps the new Chelton stuff) and that seems to've required some changes in how it works as compared to the Garmin and B/K stuff. So the user interface might be different for a real reason, rather than just being different.(Garmin promises updates to make the GNS stuff WAAS-enabled - it will be interesting to see how expensive that will be, because the higher precision GPS/WAAS approaches require a much higher screen refresh rate (5x per second I believe) and I would think that would require hardware upgrades.)...ah sorry I kinda went off there; it's a long answer to your question but the executive summary is "not in our lifetimes" will we see standardization of GPS user interfaces - and I'm not sure that's not a bad thing. It just means more learning for people that fly airplanes with different units in them.Dave Blevins
