PSU for overclocking

Featured Replies

It's been a while since I shopped for a new PSU so I have a few Q's:Q1) For overclocking either a Q9### + GTX285 system or a i79## + GTX480 system towards 4Ghz is a 850W PSU adequate, what would you suggest?Q2) For overclocking are their disadvantages with a modular PSU because of extra electrical resistance in the modular connectors?Q3) For overclocking is a single high amperage 12V rail better than multiple 12V rails?Q4) Any recommendations for a PSU for around £100?

Hi Djang0,1: 850 watts works very well for my i7 overclocked far over 4.02: Modular is a whole lot easier, and added resistance a near 0 factor IMHO.3. A single is better but any modern PSU with 4 rails from the major respected names works well.4: There are a huge number of great PSU's in that price range.Have fun!Kind regards,

Stupid question: what exactly is the 12V rail, is it the 24 pin board power connector?

Hey there are no stupid questions.... only stupid answers, and I hope this isn't one of them!My crude understanding is that the PSU's power is distributed over electrical circuits called "voltage rails" rated at 3.3V, 5V, and 12V. Apparently the available amperage on the 12V rail is most important for powering your graphics card and when overclocking your CPU (anyone else???). Some PSU's are built with a single high amperage 12V rail (I believe this is the traditional design) and others distribute the amperage over several physical 12V rails.[Edit] I think my explanation is more or less right.

NewEgg is your friend, look at the ratings on the images.

Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold 800 or 1000W. It's modular, gold rated, and brilliant quality.

Thanks for your replies. May I draw your attention gain to these:Q3) For overclocking is a single high amperage 12V rail better than multiple 12V railsQ5) Any recommendations for a future proof PSU wattage for a single Nvidia card setup?Re multiple 12V rail PSU's, I've come across reviews talking about power hungry graphics cards overloading a single virtual 12V rail causing the PSU to reset. Has anyone had issues with this?Right now I'm considering the Corsair TX850 or TX950. Are we likely to see more power hungry components after the Intel Q9### or Corei7 CPU's as well as the Nvidia GTX480? I'm not planning on a multi-graphics card setup in the future so what is a future proof PSU wattage?

As I said before. The Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold 800W is pobably one of the best PSUs available at the moment, is gold rated, supports SLi, single extremely high amp 12V rail. It's perfect for OCing. It beats those corsair PSUs any day.

I read a few reviews that suggest the Coolermaster Silent Pro runs hot when under load??? What size fan has it got? Are you confident 800W is future proof? I'm already replacing a 700W OCZ PSU.

There is also a 1000W & 1200W version available. You have to remember that they are all 90% effiicient. They have a 120mm fan I think, and I've never had heat problems with them.

Corsair Professional Series Gold AX850... Strong points:1. A truly 90% efficient PSU.2. Fully modular.3. It's around £115 ... :Applause:
