Putting FSX mesh into FS9

Featured Replies

Hello:Although FS9 "reads" FS9 SDK Resample generated terrain mesh data files containing LOD's higher than LOD-11, the actual terrain vertices (and thereby the physical shape) are not "rendered" beyond LOD-11. B) However, the FS9 rendering engine will begin using different slope textures (ex: rock faces) on hillsides / mountain sides with terrain mesh LODs of 12 and above. And, of course, the TMVL must be set in FS9.Cfg to allow any of this to happen. :( PS: FS9 can't read FSX SDK Resample generated terrain mesh data files. Hope this helps ! :( GaryGB
FS9 terrain mesh works in FSX; each such FS9 SDK Resample format BGL is limited to a single LOD (aka "Level Of Detail").Multiple single-LOD files of FS9 terrain mesh are required to avoid "blue slivers" in between scenery ground tiles in FS in 'some' terrain areas.FSX SDK Resample format terrain mesh BGLs can contain multiple LODs, and works only in FSX.FS9 cannot display a change in terrain "shape" using ANY FS9 SDK Resample format terrain mesh BGL at any LOD higher than LOD-11NOTE: Elevation data points ("vertices") in a LOD-11 terrain mesh BGL are 19.2 Meters apart on the ground; that's the finest mesh resolution FS9.1 can render.BTW: FS9 RTM (aka FS9.0) terrain mesh resolution is limited to 76 Meters apart on the ground... assuming that TMVL is set properly in FS9.Cfg to allow it.FYI: To my knowledge, there is NO source data publicly available at a native resolution of 19.2 Meters for Asia that has been used for an FS9 add-on terrain mesh file.IIUC, all existing FS9 Asia terrain mesh uses FS resampled (actually "over-sampled" to create 'artificial' resolution) 90 Meter source data from SRTM.Newer (but rather inaccurate) ASTER source data is becoming available which some (FSG ?) may have used to make 30 Meter add-on terrain mesh for FS9; I don't know if they have used the ASTER for Asia, however. We'll never see terrain mesh displayed in FS9 at more than LOD-11 / 19.2 Meter resolution; that's a hard-coded "cap" in the "FS9.1" rendering engine.Perhaps as a technicality, it is possible in the "single LOD" output mode (set with "no compression"), FSX SDK resample MIGHT be able to produce a terrain mesh BGL file that FS9 "might" read, (I haven't tested this extensively, but IIRC my single LOD-11, non-compressed FSX format test output file couldn't be read by FS9).However, IIUC, there would be no performance or resolution advantage over such a file made with FS7, FS8, or FS9 SDK resample even if one could make it in FSX SDK resample. And, on a practical basis, one will only see higher resolution terrain mesh at "closer" distances from one's aircraft:So, to process (and see) LOD resolutions from an FS9-readable terrain mesh BGL in... "FS9.1", one's TMVL / aircraft distance to a given landmark is:LOD - TMVL - Visual Display Radius (nautical miles from central Aircraft datum point that a distant LOD-related landmark is visible)13.......23.........4 (only slope texture changes beyond LOD-11, not terrain "shape")12.......22.........8 (only slope texture changes beyond LOD-11, not terrain "shape")11.......21.........1210.......20.........2709.......19.........45Hope this helps clarify the topic a bit more ! :( GaryGB

...FTX/ORBX only makes FSX scenery, but yet again stood out from the crowd as it was not just a simple makeover over the default; it featured HD macros and textures, as well as roads that are sharply detailed, created from vectors, and proper cul-de-sacs as well as more pronounced ground detail meshes that makes them come alive. All data from the macros are created from scratch.
Macros? :(
