Approach Charts 101. Somewhere to go for help?

Featured Replies

Hello. In order to try and boost my waning enjoyment of FS2k2, I'm thinking I might tackle VFR approaches using Approach Charts/Plates.( I've long given up trying to get my head around navigation i.e. VOR, DME, NBD, KFC, IRS etc, though tackling the above may help ).So, can anyone direct a COMPLETE BEGINNER on this subject to a forum or link that explains the what, how, when of VFR approaches using these charts (or are they called "plates"?).As always, your help is much appreciated.CheersAllblackPS: Is it just me, or are the forums at the "other" site much easier to read??

I think you meant to say "IFR" approach plates. There are no such thing as "VFR" approach plates.www.clearanceunlimited.com had some online tutorials but I understand this site is shutting down soon.I am not sure however how can you study and practice IFR approaches without first understanding how VOR, DME, NDB, etc work. IFR approaches require excellent understanding how all these navaids work.Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg

See! I told you I was new to this.....I've looked at Clearance Unlimited, but didn't find their instructions "basic" enough, nor could I print the pages!!!I'm hoping that I'll learn about navaids as I progress through the approach plates etc etc. I'm kind of hoping one will teach the other...I admit I may be doing this in a wacky order, but if it works at the end of the day, then it's all good.CheersAllblack

Try the following link(s)http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/index.htmIn depth articles on reading charts and navigation, needs some searching for relevant docs.http://www.jeppesen.com/wlcs/index.jsp?sec...ations_aopa.jsp(copy the whole lot into the address bar)This may help toohttp://www.tooby.demon.co.uk/P_Assist_Home.htmlThere is also a neat training aid to get your head around VORs etcAlso try this sitehttp://www.hawarden.org.uk/ (you need to register first, free)Click on 'Hawarden Virtual Aiport UK' then click on 'CV Flying School' in the left hand nav pane and then on 'Navigation training'.I also recommend looking at other sections of the flying school.Another site to check out ishttp://www.vatsim-uk.org/Pilots/pilottrain...School/menu.aspCheck out the other sections within the Pilot Training section. If, after all that you are still 'all at sea' :-) feel free to pm me for an individual email tutorial and/or Q & A session.I enjoy IFR flying so why shouldn't you :-)Rgds
