Historical scenery design, is it possible?

After spending some of my free time paging through airliners dot net looking at old photographs from the 50s, 60s, etc, I thought a neat concept for FSX would be to recreate airports and perhaps cities as they looked back in the day. Imagine flying your 707 from New York to Paris in the late 1950's and pulling up to the terminal and being just about the only turbojet aircraft on the ramp? What about flying your DC3 between New York and Washington in the 1940's, surely these places looked much different then. Maybe I'm the only one with interest in this topic, I am not sure, but I would welcome feedback from others regarding the feasibility and implementation - perhaps some commercial or private scenery developer would be interested in researching this further, settling on a time period, and developing a series of cities and airports from there. But why stop with just that? here are some other ideas:-Remove ILSs, VORs, and reverting to NDB's for navigation? -Classic cars and trucks on the ramp, parking lots, etc. -Passengers smoking in the back of the airplane/on the ramp. -Vintage airline signs at terminals and around the airport-Add your idea here!I know I'm not the first person to think of any of this stuff, I'm aware there have been various efforts made by other developers as well though I may not be aware of all of them. I simply wanted to see if I could start a conversation on this forum. It seems the boundaries of FSX get pushed further everyday and maybe this is something worth looking into. Thanks for taking the time to read this! Spud

Wow, this is a really neat idea. It has never crossed my mind until now, to be honest. I'm actually surprised that there hasn't been more mainstream support for this now that I'm thinking about it. I remember an old racing game I used to play called Midtown Madness 2 had a mod that was similar to this. It was called Classic Madness and it transformed the game from modern day cities (San Francisco and London) and cars and replaced them with vintage cars and buildings.

There are a few such sceneries kicking about, Golden Age Simulations has one or two, for example, if you buy their Boeing B-40 airliner, you get scenery for Alhambra Airport in California circa 1930, and their Stinson package has scenery for an old airfield in Blakesburg Iowa included with it. One or two warplanes have WW2-era airfields with them too, or have had them made to complement them, such as Bassingbourn in the UK for the A2A Boeing B-17G. There have been several sceneries to accompany various incarnations of the Lockheed Electra for FS so that you can have a go at replicating Amelia Earhart's attempt to circumnavigate the globe in such an aircraft.I guess there are probably quite a lot of sceneries kicking about of that kind and if one was to install a lot of them it would certainly be feasible to make historic flights in a more convincing manner.Plane Design's (excellent) Avro Lancaster has the ability to navigate by the stars in FS with the inclusion of a sextant that you can also download from (I think) Trev Morson's DC-3 website. Might wheel that out again soon, since I just pre-ordered JF's new FSX DC-3, which if you do pre-order, comes with an expansion thrown in where you can tow a Waco assault glider that is also flyable. Being that I fly gliders in real life, I'm looking forward to giving that one a whirl! Hopefully they'll consider doing the Horsa at some point.Al

Wow! This could possibly be a lure for Tom Gibson - I'd love one! My suggestion: an entire scenery of the airport's city, as how it looked back in the 50's, 60's and the 70's. If I could make a special request, I'd go for Jakarta's forgotten airfield: Kemayoran, and how it looked in the 70's as well as its last condition prior to closure in 1985, as well as the areas of Jakarta during those early days. While the 1960's scenery by CalClassic works, though not perfectly in FSX, I didn't see any cargo terminal buildings that were supposed to appear back in those old days. Dave.

Sometime back in the 30's I think, Cleveland Hopkins had a huge pad instead of individual runways. In 36 it was the biggest airport in the world. Whoda thunk. Great idea but it would be quite a project to do. Mitch

Alan, I'd also like to drive your attention towards First Class Simulations' Hurricane package. It provides an RAF base somewhere in southwestern England that became a base for the Hurricanes back in the days of the Battle of Britain. It is provided for both FS9 and FSX versions. The Battle of Britain: 70th Anniversary package from Just Flight AFAIK also provides this type of packaging, as it describes the layout of the BoB locations as it looked during the days of 1940.
