What do Scenery OBXxxx.bgl files do?

Hi guys.I have an 3rd party addon scenery that replaced the stock files with a modified file that goes in the following locations.FSX/Scenery/0404/Scenery - file name OBX38340.bglandFSX/Scenery/0405/Scenery - file name OBX35400.bglBeing curious, I am wondering what files that start with OBX do? If anyone is familiar with these I would be very interested to know. Thanks in advance.

Object files, Sean, they contain various and sundry objects that populate the FS world, such as specific custom buildings or bridges, etc.Strange that anybody would replace the default files, doesn't really seem necessary since the usual drill is to draw an exclusion around any undesired objects and create a new OB file with the replacement.Best regards.Luis

Thanks Luis. The reason I was asking is that I am using Mega Sao Paulo from Paulo Richardo and it includes a modified file for those two files that I listed. Now that I know those files are for objects, I am assuming he modifiled the orginal files to match or line up Sao Paulo specific object or buildings with the photo real ground textures.Let me ask you another question Luis while I am at it since you know so much about scenery design. The author has also included a bgl called predio10.bgl which seems to be the bgl responsible for placing some additional high rise buildings. However, the buildings that this bgl places shimmer really bad like they need to be mip mapped. The problem though is that the scenery files in the package dont seem to include any textures that correspond to those building I see in game. I removed the bgl and went to the same location and all those building were gone, so I have pin pointed that that bgl is responsible for those buildings. The question I have is, is it possible to somehow open the predio10.bgl and see what textures it is calling for so that I can hunt them down and try to mip map them?

Is presio10.bgl a placement file or a library file?If it is a model library file then you can load it into any old binary editor and search for .dds or .bmp text and you should be able to find the file name. The files will be located either in the sceneries texture folder or in the base texture folder. However, if it is a placement file then you need to determine what model library it is using which is a lot harder to do. A placement file will only reference models by a GUID number which is a hex number 32 characters long. It won't reference the file name of the library or any textures which makes tracking down the library it uses bloody difficult. It may just be easier to ask Paulo Richardo which model library he used.

Sure, Sean, as Anthony says, you can use any editor to look at the contents of a binary file. Thanks, Anthony (and by the way, like so many, I am an admirer of your work. Thanks.)There are more specialized FS tools however, the easiest to find is probably Arno Gerretsen's ModelConverterX (at his web site, of course.)You can open the bgl directly, then scroll through all the available objects while viewing them with textures displayed. When you find the one you want, just call up the Material Editor to see the textures and how they are used.Best regards.Luis

Thanks for the tip about ModelConvertorX Luis.I hadn't realised that you could open a library .bgl file with MCX and had assumed that it could only handle .mdl files. Sure enough I just dragged a library bgl I had lying about onto my MCX shortcut and it opened the file. You can get ModelConverterX from this download link:http://www.fsdevelop...p?do=file&id=83or go to the www.fsdeveloper.com website and select the downloads/scenery design/tools section. MCX is a fantastic program for anyone who is interested in FSX models. I find it really interesting to use on aircraft models as it tells you how many triangles are in the model. I don't know why I find that interesting but I do.

Thanks for the info Luis and Anthony.I think the bgl in question is most likely a placement bgl since removing it cuase the buildings to disappear, however I would suppose that if it was a model library then removing it would have cause the same thing to happen.I will download the ModelConverterX and try to open the bgl and see what happens. Thanks again.

Ok, I downloaded ModelConverterX and dropped the bgl into the opening screen and this is the results in the screen below. So according the the screen shot and the Object Information box in the top right of the screen it says SHOPPINGIBIRAPUERA.BMP & SHOPPINGIBIRAPUERA_LM.BMP, so I am assuming that those are the textures that are being called from that bgl. Is that correct? If so, I would imagine that those are the two textures that I need to find and either add mip maps to or find a way to correct since they are the ones that are shimmering and flickering in game when they are displayed at night. I'm guessing its a problem with the LM texture since it looks ok in the day time.

Yep, 100% correct. You should be able to find those bmp files in the texture folder that goes with the scenery or in the base FSX/texture folder. FSX will only look in those locations when searching for textures, first it looks in the texture folder that is with the scenery folder and if it can't find it there FSX looks in the FSX/texture folder.

In MCX in the options "texture search paths" you can create paths to texture folders. typical would be the "paired" texture folder ..\texture and the [fsxpath]\texture main texture folder.scott s..
