December 8, 201015 yr That's going to be a killer system. One thing I would change, and this is depending if you want to keep this rig FSX only or if you want to play the latest games as well. If it's the first case, you won't really need all that GPU power. But seeing as you're willing to spend so much on the entire thing, why slack off on the video card, eh? Erik L.
December 8, 201015 yr Nope! That's around x2 faster than my baby and I get 40-60 in the air around europe and 25-30fps in BIG airports, with traffic add-on @16% ( still have to wait sometimes for clearance ).It looks good to me......showoff :D :)Enjoy.Chris Farrell Chris Farrell
December 8, 201015 yr Commercial Member $6000??! You definitely don't need to spend that much to get FSX running well. -12GB of memory is overkill for anything aside from video or sound production work. FSX can't possibly address any more than 4 (32 bit application) - I think you'd be fine with 6GB.- I'd get a bigger SSD than the 90GB Vertex 2. Go for the 120 or the 240.- What are you doing for CPU cooling? You'll want to OC the CPU to ~4GHz, which is very easy to do on the 980X because of the unlocked multiplier. I'd suggest the Prolimatech Megahalems and two good 120mm fans.- I much prefer Corsair PSUs over Antec. I've had several Antecs fail on me.I'm not sure how you got to $6000 with the parts you have listed actually... December 8, 201015 yr Author Im lucky my wife has said yes to this. It was going to be $20,000 on a Honda CBR1000. Its all about the NGX that made me do this. Will order it in the next few days. $6000??! You definitely don't need to spend that much to get FSX running well. -12GB of memory is overkill for anything aside from video or sound production work. December 8, 201015 yr Commercial Member Ah ok that explains it, sorry! If you wanted to save some money, you could easily get away with a less expensive CPU. The 950 or something like that will likely OC just as high as the 980X will - the 6 cores are an improvement, but it's not as important as the raw clock speed is. December 8, 201015 yr Commercial Member If cost is no object for you then by all means get the 980X, that's the best CPU on the planet. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
December 8, 201015 yr She sounds HOT! :DThing is, as soon as you buy hardware, within a month something faster will be out. Software needs to play catch-up, with the exception of FSX on older systems. ( <= 2009/10 ) Chris Farrell

December 9, 201015 yr Wow. If you got money to burn why not I guess. However if you don't already have yoke, throttle, pedals, track IR and even FMC, MCP etc. You could very easily cut that 6k in half and get alot of hardware. Just a suggestion. I mean my 1.2K system as below eats FSX. Infact I could only improve my HDD to SSD I believe for more performce.
December 9, 201015 yr I have vertex2 drives for Win7 @ 120gb and FSX 240gb. My FSX drive is filling up way too fast, If you have loads of add ons REX, LIEB, LEPA, Photo-scenery, then you need to go large.Having said that, I'm not sure how well FSX copes with SSD's ( or the other way around ) as sometimes I still have slowdowns and the occasional blurries when textures don't load fast enough.EDIT....Not all hardware is compatible with add-ons....worth checking first! Yokes/Thottles - yes, My GO-Flight MCPPRO and VRI FMC won't work with any PMDG software. Chris Farrell
December 9, 201015 yr Hello Craig. If I were you I wouldn't look at it so much from the perspective of having that much money to spend so why not. While the 980X is an excellent processor, at $1000 I cannot justify the cost even if I were rich. I spent $1000 years ago for the AMD FX-60 (which at the time was one of the nicest processors), and wound up being displeased with it in FSX. Granted the 980X won't disappoint, but the i7-950 I have now is only $299, and I have it OC'd on air at 3.7GHZ using a Coolermaster N520 fan I picked up at Comp USA. Running real temp the temps barely go over 70C when running FSX, and it has drastically improved the performance. Granted as has been stated the Extreme Edition processors have unlocked multipliers. So I can only run a 24X multi on my i7-950 with a 155mhz FSB speed. The ASUS boards do this really well though, and I so far have not experienced any ill effects. The only thing I want to upgrade in my case is the video card, but Robert and crew got about 85% of that money the other day :( . My system overall is the i-950 OC'd to 3.7, a GTX 285 with 1 GB RAM, 6GB DDR3 PC1600 memory, with a 750GB drive for Windows, and a 150GB WD Raptor 10,000RPM drive dedicated to FSX. You can get a 300GB Raptor cheaper than an SSD, and they run just as fast as far as transfer speeds are concearned from what I have read (unless you spend a lot of dough on the SSD). These are just some options for you to consider.. You can build an awesome PC for FSX yourself for about $2200-$3000USD. I wish you luck in your ventures, as this is one of the most personal decisions I think any of us can make. Please let me know how it pans out so I can plan my future upgrades. :Big Grin:EDIT: I forgot to mention this point too. You can throw all the expensive hardware at FSX you want, but you will need to go in and tune the .cfg file to make it purr like an Italian V-12 engine. That is one of the hardest, and after lots of money poured in last concepts about FSX I managed to understand. Since spending all the time to tweak/tune about a year ago I couldn't be happier.
