Center cargo compartment heating

Featured Replies

What does "heated, but not ventilated" for the center carco compartment mean? Does "ventilated" mean there's considerable amount of air mass moving in and out of a compartment and "not ventilated" that there's only minor airflow because of pressurization (i.e. excess air flowing out of the compartment)?

Hi,I always wondered what does this phrase means...By my experience i think that the center cargo compartment is "not ventilated" because there is no fans or continous flow of air into. For example, in the afterward and forward compartments, there are outlets and sensors that control the air flow and exhaust the air overboard. (and you can carry animals...)Using the schematics, you can see that the air used for ventilation and heating is the same that is routed from the engines to the packs. So, both the heating and the ventilation systems take the air from the pneumatics ducts routing the same air from the engine stages to the packs. From this, i always thought that the difference is not into the "type" of air taken....BTW, those are only ideas, i don't know for sure what the difference between ventilated and not ventilated...Big%20Grin.gif

I believe it means that the heat is blown in (if you look at the manuals, it mentions the heat comes from P2), but there isn't dedicated ventilation function to it. There are no ventilation fans, and the movement of the air is not guaranteed (which is one of the reasons animals should not be carried except in front and aft).

I remember reading somewhere that the center cargo compartment receives excess air from the main deck. I am not sure about the phrase you are referring to though... Maybe you can make more sense out of it with this information.

All three compartments are heated, but only the forward and aft are ventilated through use of ventilation fans. The forward compartment is heated through #3 system pneumatic air pushed through temperature control valves that allow warmer air to flow through jet pumps. The aft and center system are driven from the #2 pneumatics, and operate in a similar manner.
