October 29, 200322 yr I am building a new FS9 machine. So far I have a new ASUS P4P800 mobo, a P4 3gig(800fsb), 500Watt PS, and a Radeon 9800pro.All that is left is the RAM.I figure I will get 1gig of PC4000 or PC4200 dual channel DDR ram.Is there much difference between generic brands and brand names like Geil? There is about $100 of cash difference.Any overclocking experiences that could help me out would be greatly appreciated.Speed.
October 29, 200322 yr I cannot speak about Geil (never heard of them) but the following is from an expensive personal experience. Some time back I uprgaded my system with new mo/bo, CPU and RAM, standard PC2700, not dual channel.I bought the generic stuff because of price, 2 sticks of 256MB, I think they cost me about
October 29, 200322 yr I use the P4P800 with TwinMos PC3200 Dual Channel and use the AI overclocking feature on the board which adjusts everything to it's optimum, it took my 2.4Ghz upto 3.12Ghz without any problem, everythings running perfectly, the ram frequency was also increased without any issues at all so you if you buy better quality ram such as TwinMos, Crucial or Kingston you can get away with using slower and cheaper modules at the higher operating speeds (or at least thats my experience anyway) buy some ramsinks and they can easily go much higher. Also when you get it set up go into the Bios and enable MAM, Memory Acceleration Mode, which is basically Intel PAT which is the main feature of the 875 chipset but ASUS have cracked the 865 so that it can be enabled.
October 30, 200322 yr I would go with the OCZ Gold 4000. I checked out all the reviews and this ram comes out on top every time. Very stable and will complement that mobo nicely. I have the Asus P4C800e deluxe with the OCZ ram.
October 30, 200322 yr Crucial XMS or Kingston Hyper X. In fact, in the new Maximum PC, they were the only 2 modules to pass all stress tests. Geil, Mushkin and OCZ all failed...and some terribly.Go with Kingston Hyper X Series or Crucial XMS. Best out of those two are Kingston at the moment.SixP4 2.4C @3.44 285FSBAsus P4C800 Deluxe1gb Corsair XMS PC3500 Asus V9950 FX5900 Ultra 256mb 500/950SB Audigy2 Platinum ExPioneer Trayless 16x DVDLite On 52x CDRSunBeam RaybusVantec Stealth 520watt PSULian Li PC-75 Modded BlackDTek TC-4 Cpu WaterblockSwiftech MCW50 Video WaterblockEheim 1250 318GPH pumpBay Res 5 1/4Black Ice X2 Radiator (quad 120mm)Sony CPD-G520 21"Klipsch Promedia 4.1Eluminx El KeyboardLogitech Dual OpticalSaitek X-45 HotasPics: http://community.webshots.com/user/chksix2002
October 30, 200322 yr Kingston sounds the way to go, I have Kingston in my current PC and have been happy with it, although this PC is not overclocked.I'm running into a bit of a snag though. The P4P800 manual and the kingston website say that this board can only use up to PC3200.If that is the case, then how am I supposed to overclock the P4-3gig?I figured PC4000 would let me overclock up to 500FSB (theoretically), am I wrong on this one?Speed.
October 30, 200322 yr They got the Kingston PC4000 to overclock to 526FSB stable. So yes it is possible...more than just theory. Here are the results from Max PCCorsair ran at 502mhz (rated for 500mhz)OCZ failed at 466mhz (rated for 500mhz)Buffalo failed at 516mhz (rated for 533mhz)Mushkin ran at 516mhz (rated for 466mhz)Kingston ran at 526mhz (rated for 500mhz)Keep in mind that all sticks are different and not all will be able to yield the same results......but I would personally stay away from all RAM except those made by either Kingston or Corsair when considering high overclocks. I use the P4P800 as well on my second computer, however it runs Crucial memory cause it's bone stock...heheSixP4 2.4C @3.44 285FSBAsus P4C800 Deluxe1gb Corsair XMS PC3500 Asus V9950 FX5900 Ultra 256mb 500/950SB Audigy2 Platinum ExPioneer Trayless 16x DVDLite On 52x CDRSunBeam RaybusVantec Stealth 520watt PSULian Li PC-75 Modded BlackDTek TC-4 Cpu WaterblockSwiftech MCW50 Video WaterblockEheim 1250 318GPH pumpBay Res 5 1/4Black Ice X2 Radiator (quad 120mm)Sony CPD-G520 21"Klipsch Promedia 4.1Eluminx El KeyboardLogitech Dual OpticalSaitek X-45 HotasPics: http://community.webshots.com/user/chksix2002
October 30, 200322 yr Thanks Six. I owe you a beer or two. Let me know if you want to collect and I'll meet you anywhere in Manhattan (I'm in Murray Hill).Speed.
October 30, 200322 yr No kidding bro! I'm in Brooklyn Heights/Carroll Gardens. October 30, 200322 yr Mike, that's one far out machine you got there! LOL!!!http://community.webshots.com/photo/78071139/81912023HrUgTFWhat else does it do except computing?! Producing nuclear power?!? :)/Krister Krister LindénEFMA, Finland------------------
October 30, 200322 yr Chk,I wouldn't take what Maximum PC says 100% to heart. They are in no way shape or form close to the magazine they used to be. I started reading it when it was called BOOT and you had an easier time finding gold in the rockies than a copy of it.When you start to approach the speeds that we are talking about here your going to run into memory that is VERY finnicky. To state that memory is bad just becuase it failed a test in a magazine article is really not posting good info.My test rig is currently running OCZ PC4000 at the exact same settings your running on the exact same MB you are. The difference is I had to Vapochill my 3Ghz P4C to reach a 100% stable clock speed of 4.2Ghz.My wifes P4 3.06 is currently running OCZ PC2700 at 165 FSB air cooled 100% stable at 3.7Ghz.As you can see my FS9 Box is using Kingston RDRAM and I swear by it.You are right Kingston and Corsair both manufacture very good RAM but please take into account more than just one article or review to base your choice off of. To me other user inputs are much more valuable.Nice machine by the way. You really should look into Phase change. I ran H2O for a while but than saw the way to OC heaven.Have a good one.BobbyP.S. For all those hear, Let's keep this in the hardware forum from now on. That's what it's here for.
October 30, 200322 yr You're absolutely right bro...each specific module differs, and then one must also consider the operating differences regarding specific chipsets. However, OCZ doesn't have a great track record, and only recently has it started producing better quality sticks. I have owned them before and they were nothing but problems for me personally. That's not saying they are bad...I've just had bad experiences. But heck, if you can get them to skyrocket in the FSB realm, cheers! You know I want to go phase change, but I'm a bit of a pansy in that area. Thanks for the comments bro.MikePS Krister...it drains all the power from my block when I turn it on....teehee P4 2.4C @3.44 285FSBAsus P4C800 Deluxe1gb Corsair XMS PC3500 Asus V9950 FX5900 Ultra 256mb 500/950SB Audigy2 Platinum ExPioneer Trayless 16x DVDLite On 52x CDRSunBeam RaybusVantec Stealth 520watt PSULian Li PC-75 Modded BlackDTek TC-4 Cpu WaterblockSwiftech MCW50 Video WaterblockEheim 1250 318GPH pumpBay Res 5 1/4Black Ice X2 Radiator (quad 120mm)Sony CPD-G520 21"Klipsch Promedia 4.1Eluminx El KeyboardLogitech Dual OpticalSaitek X-45 HotasPics: http://community.webshots.com/user/chksix2002
October 30, 200322 yr Oh so YOU were the one that caused the black out!I bought the PC4000 Kingston Hyper-X for $316 last night.Bobby, I'll put future OC msgs in the correct forum (i'm sure there will be many), I just needed some quick, quality replies to make my purchasing decision. Thanks to everyone for your help, OC is much harder than it used to be, albeit less of a gamble.Mike, I sent you a email via forum with my contact details. I got a meeting tonight, haloween party at ciprianis on 42nd tomorrow night, and a dual x-country to Binghamton on the weekend (birthday present to my brother in law is to fly him back to NY) so we can go to ESPN next week sometime. Just name your day, drinks are on me.Speed.
October 30, 200322 yr Hi,I would be interested to know how much all that cost you and how long in hours it took you to complete the setup. You can leave out the cost for the joysticks. And how long ago did you bu all that?Thanks,Joehttp://aboutpolitics.net/images/bannerav.gif.About Politics.net - FORUMShttp://pub207.ezboard.com/bpoliticsgivemel...tyorgivemedeath.Contribute to the Richard Harvey Scholarship Fund.http://www.avsim.com/pages/scholarship.shtml CryptoSonar on Twitch & YouTube.
October 30, 200322 yr Just about the same platform: P4 2.8/800, P4P800 Deluxe, 9800 Pro.I orginally bought Corsair Twinx 1024 and it was DOA, so I sent it back to newegg. I'm now running Kingston "CL333" DDR400 and I'm stabile at ~ 235 FSB with no voltage bump. I'm sure I could go faster, I just haven't tried. I've always had good luck with Kingston, but this time I thought I'd buy "the best" only to run into problems, so it's now back to old faithful. Please post once your system is built. I'm interested to see what you can run at.Good luck!
