RAM - two or four modules?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, just a simple question. Is there any diference between having two 4GB DDR3 modules or four 2GB DDR3 modules in terms of performance? Or is it only with four modules you have only twice as high power consumption? Thanks for the reply.

Yes, more DIMMs generally puts more workload on the memory controller, and as a result tends to reduce overclockability. Not always, but in my experience nearly always. In many cases the motherboard will automatically widen some of the timings when it detects that the second bank of DIMMs is populated, slowing down the memory subsystem.Given the choice I'd go with 2x4GB DIMMs assuming comparable voltages, speed, and timings.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

2x4GB CL7? All I've seen is CL8. Send me a link, please.

It is a bit strange.Product page on my favourite webstore says 8-8-8-24.Patriot website says 8-9-8-24And the label on the modules says 7-9-7-21 as on this picture:K1012212033187665470371183756265.jpg

If FSX is the only sys in play, then 2 are fine. If you plan on other games, then you will want more.
