How exactly do "virtual airlines" work?

Featured Replies

Hi all,I've came across a few "virtual airlines" websites. I have no idea how this concept works. Is it online play on Vatsim? Or is it offline mode and you just log it on the VA website? What is the purpose and goal? How does it work? Would appreciate clarifications. Thanks.Note: I'm trying to find "purpose" to my flights. ie. logbooks, virtual airlines, etc. Any suggestion in this regards would be appreciated.

I'm with AFA. Check out www.flyafa.com. You can choose your flight from the flight list. There are multiple HUBS and they are linked with pacific airways. Lots of people loved the freedom of choice for your flight instead of being assigned a flight. there is a lot of versatility between PAY and AFA hubs so you can fly anywhere. VATSIM is encouraged but not mandatory. Its based off of the honor system, although they are currently working on an ACARS system. Many pilots have been with other VA's and are happier with APG(American Flight Airways and Pacific Airways). We participate in Friday Night Ops hosted by VatUSA and we have a Fly-in every Sunday and Tues that are flown online and controlled by members of our group. I started fooling with with FS2002 and got bored quickly. I joined in Nov. and recently started on VATSIM. The purpose is to have fun and to learn at your pace. Plenty of the members are willing to answer any question you may have. Each Hub has a director and a chief pilot that will help in anyway you may need. I cant tell you how much I have learned since joining, from planning a flight to landing a plane. I noticed you are looking for purpose to your flights and I wanted the same thing, thats why I'm recommending them to you. Once again the best part about our VA is the freedom of choice for you to fly to and the willingness of the community to help and fly with you on VATSIM. AFA has been around for 20 years and not many stay around for long. Come on by you wont regret it.

Hi ???? [Don't see a name, which is required here in the Avsim Forums]VAs work a lot like real airline, hence the concept of a "virtual" airline. You join as a junior pilot and build time flying routes. Following each flight you're generally required to file a PIREP (pilot report) to log your flight and total flight time. As you build hours you climb the pilot ranks. There are many different implementations of VAs, so these general comments may be different for many that you find, however, the basic concepts are the same. Some VAs have their own aircraft paint schemes that you're "required" to use, but many don't have those requirements. You can also fly online in VATSIM if you choose, or offline on your own, it doesn't matter. They can be a lot of fun... give one a try!

Thanks all. This is very interesting!Any popular VA whose hub is in Europe, specifically either out of London or Rome?

Hi Doug,No name is necessary for the general AVSIM forums. Yes, sub forums can set their own rules.

PMDG is the name police. I notice a lot use FSPassengers also to document flights.

Got it. Thanks for clarifying!
