Scenery/terrain for the UK

Featured Replies

HelloApologies if this has been asked many times, reading through old posts has confused me! I'm going to get FS9 as I think it will work best on my computer but would like to enhance the UK scenery. I would also like som airfields to be quite detailed and AI traffic too. So. what is the best way forward for this. UK2000 scenery seems to be well regarded and looking at the screen shots probably fits my need. I don't want detail over the top, for example I currently use FU3 and am actually quite happy with its appearnance (easily pleased!) Other options appear to be from Just Flight or the Horizon Gen-X series (would have to be v2 as I wan to fly at night as well). So basically I'm asking what would be best way forward with out spending too much. The types of A/C that would intrest me most are light A/C an possibly a classic mil jet like a JP or Hunter.Appreciate any pointers as there is so much out there (all the more confusing as most titles appear to be for FSX now)Thanks.

Hi. I don't know if I'm the best one to answer this as I too am trying to get my scenery for the UK and Europe as good as I can, I was only asking a similar question recently in this forum (see 'which European scenery packages are currently the best?'). I have been using FS9 for quite a few years now but have had to break away from it recently and am hoping to get back into it again. Like you, I would have liked FSX which I have but my PC does not take to very well so am sticking with FS9. So, in answer to your questions, I have installed VFR Photographic Scenery and VFR Terrain which I personally think is very good. Then I have added various items like trees, pylons, wind farms etc to make it a bit more interesting. There used to be a very good website called The VFR Addons database which had loads of extras but sadly this no longer exists, but there are other websites which you can still get these from which may be worth looking at.I recently bought and downloaded Ultimate Terrain Europe but in my honest opinion this seemed to conflict with my current scenery but it may just be a fault with me. I was looking at Horizon's Generation X but isn't this just for FSX? I would have liked to have that as the scenery looking amazing. I am still thinking about getting Ground Environment Pro and FS Global which is pretty pricey (approx £45, cheapest I have seen) but still not sure yet.As to UK2000, I have UK2000 Manchester Extreme installed as I used to work at Manchester Airport and I think that is a fantastic product, definatley worth considering. That is the only UK2000 product I have so I cannot advise on any other.AI Traffic wise, I use WOAI and have all the packages installed, I find this is adequate for my needs. They may not be all up-to-date as a lot of people like the flight plans to be precise and download them but to be honest, I think WOAI does the job for me fine.Hope this has helped you a little, I know there is so much out there to choose from and I am confused as well after all these years, but I think you just have to do your homework a bit and read reviews and look at videos on places like Youtube which will give you an idea of what you want.Good luck!

Go to www.uk2000scenery.com and try their free scenery offerings first. There are several available there and they are frame-rate friendly. If you like them you can buy quite a few others in that range or go for the Extreme range.Colin B

Thanks so far for the replies. So does the UK2000 scenery also include scenery away from the airport and topographical features or are they just airport scenery? When I install FS9 I will try a free download. The Horizon Gen-X I believe has the old FS9 files as well as the new FSX ones so two in one really?" I have installed VFR Photographic Scenery and VFR Terrain"Who makes this product, is it the Just Flight package? It'll all make sense to me soon I hope, once it's up and running.

VFR Photographic Scenery and VFR Terrain is or was made by Horizon which is suitable for FS2002 and FS2004. I bought these a few years ago when they were considered the 'must have's'.Looking at Horizon's website at the specifications for Generation X, the minimum requirements it says it needs is FSX so I am not sure if can run on FS9. Can anyone clarify that as I would be interested in installing that if it can run ok on FS9?The UK2000 product I have is just airport scenery which includes a bit of scenery around the perimeter such as roads, houses, car parks etc. That's all I can tell you I'm afraid

Hi!As I live there I have been keen to get the best possible UK scenery too. There is no question that the UK2000 Extreme series of airports are up there amongst the highest quality airport scenery available anywhere (I have them all, so I can really attest to that). I also have the VFR Photographic scenery and VFR Terrain from Just Flight/Horizon and although they are photoreal and reasonable from altitude (at least above 4000feet), I have to say that they are incredibly dull and virtually featureless - not at all in the league of Megascenery for example or indeed the FranceVFR regional series which are not only the best scenery areas available for Europe but, in my opinion, are the best scenery areas for FS9 anywhere in the world.Bill

Ok.it sounds like the UK2000 airport series will be obtained at some point but I would prefer to get the UK terrain/topography done first. Ultimate Terrain Europe does look ok if I can find one for sale, though I can get a Just Flight package for £40 which aint bad...

Thought I'd close this post by letting you know my final choice. I went for the whole package of Just Flight photo scenery and terrain along with the UK2000 airports. The airport (the few I've been to) are fantastic. The scenery aint bad but does get blurred at times so maybe needs some tweaking. I'd still like to get UT Europe or something for night flying. I also got Active Sky 6.5 for Wx. Not sure what difference it makes in terms of cloud textures etc (not sure what I'm doing!) but the real Wx part is quite accurate. Just got to get my AI sorted then I'll be happy.Thought I'd close this post by letting you know my final choice. I'm not familiar with the Just Flight scenery, and don't know whether it's just textures or whether it contains mesh data (to create the hills/valleys etc).I didn't know anything about mesh until very recently, and now cannot imagine flying in my sim-world without it. I picked up FSGlobal 2010 on 6 DVD's and if you get this, you will not be disappointed. It covers the whole world basically so you will have realistic hills, valleys, mountains etc. Coupled with Ultimate Terrain and Ground Environment Pro my sim has never looked better! Hope this helps.
