Differnce between Intel and AMD CPU

Featured Replies

Hi folks, I´ve just searched through the web and found an AMD quad core CPU with 3,4 GHz for only 140€. My CPU was listed for about the same and I can get only 3 GHz. Why are most AMD CPU´s cheaper than the Intel ones? Is Intel better/faster or why is this so?

Best regards, Steffen

Yes, Intels are faster than AMDs (better IPC = Intructions Per Clock) An AMD Thuban has about the same IPC than your C2Q.AMD is still producing 45nm chips while Intel has had 32nm for quite some time.AMD CPUs are still very good for the price especially for heavily threaded applications like video encoding and stuff

Does this my 3 GHz CPU is as fast as their 3.4 GHz compared to IPC?

No, what I mean is that same IPC = same performance clock for clock. So a 3.4GHz Phenom II X4 should a bit faster than your C2Q 8300 at 3GHz. The Phenom II also has an integrated IMC and L3 cache that migh speed up things a litttle bit depending on what you're running

So it would be a bit faster, but that´s obvious, it has a higher clock speed. But why are they so cheap compared to the intel ones?

We are comparing P2 against C2Q, but try a SB that has something like a 50% higher IPC and a lot more OC headroom. AMD competes in the bang for the buck arena but if you want to go high end, you need to go with Intel. Intel's hexacores are so expensive because there's no AMD counterpart. Most games are GPU limited and a Phenom will do just fine, but for CPU intensive tasks Intel's performance is much better

That´s understood. I was just curious whether it would make sens to take an AMD CPU when I build a new system and save the money for other things. But if I wanna build a new system (which I actually can´t do) I will go for an Sandy Bridge or even Ivy Bridge to be on the secure side.

It depends on what you will do with your rig. FSX happens to be very CPU intensive and Intel's mainstream platforms like SB are really not that pricey. An extra 100-150€ for a 60-70% more performance is a reasonable in my book

Yeah, I saw that SB isn´t that expensive that I thought, just 280€. I will definely build my next system on my own and don´t buy it already assembled like my actuall one is.

I run a AMD 970 Black at 4ghz solid as a rock. Go out and buy some nice addons with the money saved instead of paying for Intel propoganda! 95% of people do not no any better.
So you are saying IBM, HP, DELL, don't know any better and just pay extra for Intel chips....? You do realize free market principles do apply here.

HelloWhere I live I could getAMD 970 Black @ £139 and OC it to 4ghz Or Intel 2500K @ £173 and OC it to 5ghzNow that is an extra 1ghz for £34, to me that represents better value given that even at stock speed the 2500K is faster.Personally I really hope Bulldozer turns out to have a great price/performance ratio if only for the reason that I fancy a change after my last two CPU's being Intel.

Never buy an AMD processor ,its a junk ,some people think that bicycle is a bicycle why to pay more for the one I disagreeMy friend purchased ones computer with AMD processor and throw it through the window ,the store didn't wanted give him money backBefore landing it was freezing :) Man

Well, that the programm freezes (your talking of FSX or?) isn´t really related to the CPU.Why not buying an AMD CPU? - My system before this one had an AMD Athlon 64 x2 5000 CPU and it worked quite well, obviuosly not comparable to my Intel quad core. One time Intel, anytime Intel!

Please, let's not turn this into another Intel vs AMD thread

I think this is needed in this thread to satisfy some:http://lmgtfy.com/?q=intel+vs+amdAnd for serious: just trying to be "a little bit funny".
