Request help graphics card

Featured Replies

Hi all,Because I know there are some people here having some very nice knowledge about computer stuff, I came here to ask something :(- I'm currently using the ATI Radeon HD5570 graphics cards, 1024 MB, 400MHz, DDR3, 128 bit. Do you recommend to upgrade this one?I have already looked for some graphics cards but seriously, wich one do I need to take! :Shocked:First of all, I really do not know the differences between DDR/GDDR series. I know, the newest version is GDDR-5 but what on earth is "DDR/GDDR?" Secondly, how many bit would be nice for FSX? 128 bit, 256 bit or 384 bit? As long as I can read the information on the screens (PFD/ND) in VC mode well, then I'm happy. I dislike it to zoom-in everytime to monitor the figures. Beside that. when moving around the cockpit in VC Mode, text on the displays are really blurry. The lines and text/information are not very sharp but crispy. I really dislike that.Third, how many MHz would be nice? 700 MHz or immediately the 850 MHz one?Of course, I know: higher is (most time) better. I know, if I want the best of best I have to take a graphics card with GDDR-5, 2048 MB, 850 MHz, 385 bit etc... but héy I'm not rich you know :( So, I like to have some advise =)Already many thanks!! I appreciate it.Edit: Don't take a look to my specs (signature) because I'm collecting information for a new processor, motherboards, cooler and graphics card. For now I'm almost sure I take the following: Intel Core i5-2500K, MSI P67A-GD65, Corsair A70 and Corsair 2x4 GB RAM DDR3-1333.

Hey guys, how about the eVGA GTX 285. I know we are now at the 5xx line but the specifications of the 285 are pretty nice. The GTX285: 1 GB, 648 MHz, GDDR-3, 512 bit (!).

Steven Albi

I have the 285 and it works fine for me (with I7-920 etc). Apparently the 400 series runs hot. The 580 would be the way to go. Having said that it would not hurt to check out ATI's latest offerings.

A card based on the Nvidia GTX 460, GTX 560Ti, GTX 570, or GTX 580 are all you should be looking at for an FS machine right now if you ask me. Everything else is older/slower or runs really hot (like the 470 and 480, which have been replaced by the 5xx cards). Get 1GB of RAM or more on the card - the DDR, GDRR etc stuff is largely irrelevant, a particular GPU usually only uses one kind of memory.

And how many rotations in MHz would be optimal? Also how many bits?I see some nice cards with more than 256 bits (384, 512 for example) but itsn't that abit too redundant?-How about these cards:Sapphire ATI Radeon HD6850 - 1024 MB, 775 MHz, GDDR-5 and 256 bit (Alternate, €159,90)XFX ATI Radeon HD5850 - 1024 MB, 765 MHz, GDDR-5 and 256 bit. (Alternate, €184,90)eVGA GTX 470 SuperClocked - 1280 MB, 625 MHz, GDDR-5 and 320 bit. (Alternate, €199,90)

Anybody has an ATI Radeon HD 6870? 1 GB-GDDR5, 900 MHz and 256 bit.

ATI/AMD cards are not recommended for FSX because of driver issues and lack of combined AA modes. I did post exactly what my recommendation was to you earlier in this thread - get a Nvidia GTX 460, 560 Ti, 570, or 580 based card with at least 1GB of RAM. The clock speeds, pipeline bits etc do not matter - each GPU has a spec and that's what it uses, you aren't going to find one GTX570 that is 320-bit and another that's 256 or something - all GTX570s are 320-bit, have a base clock speed of 732MHz and so on. The chip on the card is what matters most - you can't say a 900MHz ATI card is better than a 732MHz Nvidia card, it doesn't work like that.

I have an EVGA 560Ti and it is fantastic w/ FSX. I get no stutters or anything with the GTX560Ti. I got the EVGA superclocked version because it was only 10 bucks more and now I don't have to spend the time to OC it myself. EVGA is quality btw. Their cards are really nice and sturdy. No cheapo materials. This card runs cool too. Overall, highly recommended! I wouldn't pay the 100 dollar difference for the 570 when the 560Ti gives me all that I want.EDIT. Here is the product page. It is pretty sweet! 900 MHz and 384 processor cores. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130610

- What are the differences between the 560 series and the 560 Ti series?- Why are NVIDEA gpu's exaclty better for FSX than ATI gpu's?- 256 bit enough? How about the 350 bit? (What will make the difference within FSX?)

Steven Albi

1. There is no straight 560. The my guess is that the postfix Ti means that there will be one or more variants of the 560 in the future. 2. Ryan answered this above. a.) driver issues b.) no combined AA ( Anti-Aliasing ) modesBelieve me, I've been the ati route. Never again will I repeat that mistake. 3. In a program like FSX, that is perfectly fine.

I don't know how to make this any clearer - GPUs are what they are. The GTX 5xx series are all 320-bit pipelines, the ATI 6xxx series are 256-bit. That's just the memory interface and pipline each chip was designed with - you cannot look at one or the other and say "Oh 320 is a bigger number than 256, that means the card is better." It does NOT work like that. Stop looking at the bit specification, it is essentially meaningless as long as you're comparing cards that are in the same generation. What matters with video cards is the exact chip that is on the card and to a lesser extent the amount of memory. You seem to want me to tell you to buy something other than what I've been telling you to get for this entire thread. If you're going to keep doing that then I'm going to stop replying and you can just buy whatever you want. I'm not sure what you expect, I work for PMDG and I'm telling you what will best run our airplane. The four cards I've told you to look at, the GTX 460, 560 Ti, 570 and 580 are all from Nvidia's latest chip generation, called the GF110. That's why I'm telling you to look at just those four cards - anything else is old and obsolete and shouldn't be considered by someone looking to get a new card right now.

See my edit.

3. In a program like fsx it is perfectly fine. It is not important. The GPU chip itself is what's important. EDIT: Ryan is exactly right. See what he says above. It can't be said better or clearer than this.

No no, I appreciate your help but because I always sticked with ATI I'm feeling more "home, safe" with ATI and that why I'm comparing some ATI cards with NVIDIA. But because you guys gave me some good explainations, I can go next now why I have to take NVIDIA. Besides that, I'm trying to get some knowledge about hardware and also graphics cards.

The 560 Ti of eVGA looks awesome. At least not toooo expensive for me. It's an affordable price for me :D But some 560 Ti cards are "FPB" or "OverClocked." What's FPB? :(
