FS9 GPS Broken

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, So yesterday, I booted up FS9 after installing an iFDG MD-11 and I was surprised to see the GPS was acting all weird. It was working fine day before yesterday and the only add-ons I installed since day before yesterday was that MD-11. I thought it was something gone wrong with the aircraft's panel or something so I just ignored it. This afternoon though, I noticed the GPS was still suffering from the same problem. I'm attaching below a screenshot so you can see what's going on with it:TzKrF.jpgAs you can see, something is definitely not right. However, the GPS continues to function and tracks everything normally leading me to feel even more perplexed. Does anyone have any pointers? Thanks in advance.

Maybe a missing font? Why don't you try a System Restore to a point before the install of the MD-11?Best regards from Colombia,Luis Miguel

I'm not sure how it could be a missing font if it was working just fine before I installed the aircraft. I downloaded the file from the Avsim library itself and I am certain there were no font files in there. I have not tried a System Restore as I'm saving that as a last resort. I was hoping I'd get a workaround here first before attempting something as significant as that.Any other pointers would be welcome. :)

Anyone else have suggestions for help? I haven't fired up the sim for over 1½ weeks because of this issue.

Just for the heck of it, why not check the fonts that you have installed in your "Flight Simulator 9\Fonts" folder against the list which I've included below. This list is the default fonts that are installed during a fresh FS9 installation. You may also have a corrupted font file so you might want to grab the fonts from the FS9 install CDs and copy them into your "Flight Simulator 9\Fonts" folder, overwriting if asked. One more thing you can try as well. Grab the "fs9gps.cab" file from the FS9 CDs and copy it to your "Flight Simulator 9\Gauges" folder. overwriting if asked. If you're interested, there is file named gps_500.xml in the .CAB file which is littered with references to the "Arial Black" font which I believe is the "arialnb.ttf" file. Now I seem to remember a couple of years back someone else had the exact same issue and it was discovered that their Arial Black font was replaced by another version. The solution was to get the default fonts and overwrite what they had in their "Flight Simulator 9\fonts" folder. It's worth a try...MarkDefault FS9 Fonts (Flight Simulator 9\Fonts)arialnb.ttfarialnbi.ttfglassga.ttfList.ttmaian.ttfmaiandb.ttfmsgothic.ttcnwgthc.ttfquartz.ttfGarmin 500 GPS file (Flight Simulator 9\Gauges)fs9gps.cab

Cheers, I seem to be missing the List.tt font file. No idea how that could have happened, I've never tinkered about in that folder before. Hell, I didn't even know it existed before you pointed it out, and I've been using FS9 for over 7 years now, lol. I'll give your suggestion a try and report back, just need to dig up my FS9 CD's first. :)

Swoop, I beg to differ - List.tt is not one of the default fonts - at least not on my default FS2004 setup.I also checked the install disks - it is not on any of them.It must have been placed in the folder by some other addition.

List.tt was supposed to be List.txt, (which in my infinite wisdom), neglected to remove when I posted the list of fonts. That file is simply generated by the DOS command "dir/b/o:gne >> List.txt". The reason that I forgot to remove it was because it was late and I fat fingered the file name to "List.tt" which my quick perusing eyes understood as a True Type file. The good thing is that the people who needed to see this post actually did and I still think that they should try the font and gps replacements. Opa, can you think of anything else they need to do...maybe register or replace the arialnb.ttf within Windows itself? If so you might want to drop a copy of the font into your Windows\Fonts folder, (which actually maybe the fix), or here's another way...How to add or remove a system fontMark

Alrighty, so I tried replacing all the Font files from the FS9 CD's, replaced the FS9gps.cab from the CDs, copied the arialnb.ttf to the Windows\Fonts folder (which crashes Windows Explorer for some odd reason), but the end result is still the same. I still have a blank GPS.

I think that someone was me: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/231442-gps-font-now-in-italics/The Outhouse link doesn't work anymore, but the instructions are there. The specific font is "ariblk.ttf", not "arialnb.ttf".Not sure if that'll fix your problem, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the reply, but that hasn't fixed it either. My issue is that the GPS is completely blank, no italicized text or anything. I'm stumped as to what could be going on. I'm starting to think that I may have perhaps installed FS Real Time around the time this happened, but I uninstalled it a couple hours later because it didn't suit my taste. Could that be the culprit? I'm really lost.
