April 17, 201115 yr 3) Any flight over about 2 1/2 hrs, we genrally pulled out the ches board. Some had a little peg below the piece you stuck into the board, others were magnetic. Now that would put me to sleep. I usually read the far, aim, aircraft manuals or the USA today on my iPad. I think this is the best tool for boredom has our charts, maps, books and newspapers all in one place on the yoke. Chris Miller
April 17, 201115 yr I put my Evo phone in if I'm with a friend that I trust. Listening to music and staring at the ground will put you to sleep in a hurry, though. It's also irritating if the controller is busy over our frequency. Constantly interrupting my tunes. :( :( A good friend of mine who works at a certain regional airline (just upgraded to captain on a Q400) said that every once in a while the pilot not flying can take a nap if the pilot flying agrees. Obviously this is frowned upon, but it happens. Of course this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, but it is. :( Still, it's not encouraged by any US operator or the FAA. It's in fact discouraged. Strongly. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules

April 18, 201115 yr Boring? Even flying exclusively longerange isn't boring, except you have the wrong attitude towards your job.Nice reply....or another way of looking at it is the worse day in the flight deck is better then the best day in some office somewhere. April 21, 201115 yr Author Very interesting topic I pulled - seems to be an ongoing one...So please tell me, what does a PIC do in the three phases of flight? And what is the PNF doing in the same phases? Is it true that one pilot could master the job at Flightlevel, but because two are in the cockpit, one has almost nothing to do?I know, I could not take a nap in phases where I am not needed to do much. If I would do so, whenever the PIC wakes me up, I would need too long to be able to concentrate again... So how do you manage this problem? Regards, Torben Hadler

April 21, 201115 yr If I would do so, whenever the PIC wakes me up, I would need too long to be able to concentrate again... So how do you manage this problem? That's why you should not sleep for more than 20-45min as you are instantly awake if you are not sleeping any longer. The 45min are rather new and the legal text in the various operation manuals has been adapted not too long ago.The PIC can be PF and PNF.The PF is doing the flying part and the PNF is doing all the paperwork, ATC comm etc....One pilot either the PIC or the COPI can (and has to be able to) 'master' every phase of flight, not only cruise, on his own without the help or support of the second guy.
April 21, 201115 yr So not true. The worst day on the flight deck is shear terror!Depends how you look at it. I wasn't thinking in that extreme. Just trying to point out some people would rather be up there then stuck behind a desk somewhere. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
