June 10, 201114 yr Probably around 5GHz with a lot of tweaking. Should go to 4.5 - 4.8 with little trouble. I have trouble but I think it's a mobo issue. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
June 10, 201114 yr Get a good cooler when reaching for those speeds...I read that somewhere... Google is nice, other forums are good, I dunno anything, I´m a parrot. But I´ve blown up more hardware in 2 years than I would dare to mention, it´s called education expenditure!
June 11, 201114 yr Author Commercial Member As said before I am trying to do this on air, the cooler choice is this:Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366/LGA1156/LGA1155/LGA775/AM2/AM2)As before I am trying to refine my purchases here. Ideally I will simply recycle my power supply, HDs, case and so on from my old system as I see no point in forking out more money when these are perfectly servicable. I have a Lan Li case, 850W module supply of a reputable brand (can't remember exactly who but probably Corsair). Unless HD loading times makes a massive difference to FSX performance while running I can live with standard drives for now, I'm not particularly impatient when it comes to loading times.. I have 3TB worth of drive space in the current machine available so it's a case of swapping out the board, CPU, GFX,cooler and ram only really. My O/S choice was always Windows 7 64-bit, probably the home premium edition, as I don't need any of the extra built in functionality of the ultimate packages.Further comments are welcomed, I considered water cooling but I am wondering if in my case the expense of it can be justified.Thoughts?Craig Craig Read, EGLL
June 11, 201114 yr Ok now I am confident that my RAM choice of Mushkin seems to be appropriate.... I am settled on my components now... But based on member experience, what are the limits of overclocking the SB on air with this setup? The everyday use limit with my cooler is 5.0 ghz. I'm pretty sure I could run 5.2 (everyday use) with a high end air cooler.Note:Everyday use is NOT running Prime95 with 4 cores. June 12, 201114 yr Author Commercial Member I guess it seems that my cooler choice seems to be a good one. Unless anyone has any particular problems or considerations I need to pay attention to then I will probably settle on what I have here for now. Thanks for your time!CheersCrag Craig Read, EGLL
