FSUIPC & PFC.DLL = destructive to FS9?

Featured Replies

Hi, over the last few years, I have struggled with my PFC control quadrant as well as trying to get it to run within FS okay.. now with FS9, it is no exception... using the pfc.dll and fsuipc DOES cause hangs on exit, and during situation saving. Without those modules and unfortunately the use of my control console, there is never a problem....Since recently upgrading to WinXP, I have had out of memory errors when using PMDG 737. I recently (yesterday) reformatted my drive and have reinstalled FS9, using it right out of the box as of now, using the default aircraft with the execption of using my PFC quad ...meaning the .dlls are back! And yes, even on my "new" XP computer (the reformated one) FS9 will still hang on exit again, randomly.Clearly the fault of fsuipc or pfc.dll OR just my ocmputer...any one else with the same problems???So far, fingers crossed, the out of memory errors are gone...maybe PMDG 737 did that.Sincerely, Peter Jameslong standing fellow simmer who's just been so busy lately, I have not had much time to chat in forums.

Hi Peter,Welcome back to the wonderful "ever more complicated" world of FS.I would suggest you visit Pete Dowson's forum http://forums.simflight.com/viewforum.php?f=54where a topic like this might be answered more quickly. I too have the PFC Yoke and Throttles and have been EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED AND DISAPPOINTED with my $1000 purchase because of the extreme noise generated by the hardware and my seeming inability to fix the issue. However, i do find FSUIPC 1.325 to be stable and not cause problems with FS .. Pete has a new PFC.dll (1.82) available .. and to be honest have disconnected all my expensive gear out of frustration so I can;t speak to the fsuipc/pfc combo at the moment. are you running XP PRO or XP Home? Have you a registered copy of FSUIPC? ... a couple of questions to level set where you are.I mention "ever more complicated" above because once I was a happy USER .. things WORKED .. no brains involved, I could concentrate on FLYING, PLANNING, having fun and a challenge ... now interconnections, interrelationships, compatibility issues are EVERYWHERE and making our little hobby more appropriate for tinkerers and hard/software engineers than for "would-be" flyers. O well, !!I certainly don;t want to appear to be bashing PFC ... and would like to carry on this conversation "offline" .. if you care to write me at [email protected]. I have final exams to give tonight and tomorrow night and a xmas event for wednesday night, but will hook up the PFC gear and give it a try again .. on thursday ... maybe with the Piper Meridian and see if the new DLL has helped. I know Pete D has included some new tweaks in the PFC DLL and maybe something that dampens some of the electrical noise ... Cheers ..

I seriously doubt it's anything to do with FSUIPC-literally thousands of people are using the.dll without any problem.I would be looking at the PFC(and its .dll) .Have you tried running FS9 without it? (at least temporarily to see if the problem disappears?)Suggest you remove the .dll and see if FS9 will open, fly and shutdown normally.Dave

I'm running the Jetliner Yoke/Rudder/Throttle Quadrant, and Avionics box and have nothing at all to complain about in FS9... don't really know what to say.. have you tried talking to PFC at all? Anytime I have called for support I have had my problem handled and resolved the same day.Chris

Hi Paul. To be honest, it is time to give up on PFC. I have had year after year of the quadrant NOT working with FS2002 or FS9..or betas. it's either crash to desktop in FS9, scenery loading hangs in FS2002 or just a freeze or reboot needed when using a quadrant and ANY PFC.DLL. I don't know what it is really. I have delt with PFC many many time, and they are helpful, friendly etc... yet can not solve these problems nor have ever had such problems on their equipment...there is no mentioning of all the problems in the PFC troubleshooting section on their website either, but yet what you just told me, I am not alone.. They have a serious problem with their hardware and or FSUIPC combined to reak havoc with computers, comm ports or just plain incompatibility with FS, an version! I have been long awaiting to do a review on thier hardware, as they are very gracious in getting me a console three years ago. But honestly, in 3 years, I have not been able to get it to work before FS or my whole machine dies... I have had to reformat my drive this time and I am fed up.PFC, no more.no more.it sure looks and feels great... but no more.my wife will thank me for never using it again.any one want to buy a quadrant?!?Petertnhanks,Paul...let's talk! You're near my location!Peter

Hi Peter, I have some problems with it. I'll try to sent the email I sent Paul.Regards, Nick

Peter,I am running WinXP Pro, FS9, PFC throttle quad and a registered version of FSUIPC with no prolems. Actually, my PFC stuff has worked pretty flawlessly even with FS2002. I wonder if they changed the hardware controllers -- perhaps the newer version have fewer issues. Hope you find the answer.Steve

could be just bad comm ports I guess... I must wait to get a new computer to use the setup again.

I use the PFC Jetliner + Quad + Cirrus Jet pedals. Works flawlessly here now. When I first built this system, the story was not happy. Turned out to be a bad (but not dead) serial I/O controller ASIC on the motherboard, making the comm ports intermittent and all but unuseable. And there were many similar complaints on Gigabyte mobos at the time. I added a $35 SIIG PCI serial port card, and all's been well ever since. I've also successfully used a Belkin FSU103 serial-to-USB adapter with the PFC quadrant. Have you tried using another serial device (i.e. a modem) on that port?As regards to noise, PFC has a noise reduction modification which places a capacitor across a couple leads of an op amp IC on the interface board in the throttle quadrant. I had some moderate noise on mine caused by the power supply...I connected an HP 6291A variable-voltage regulated supply dialed up to 12.0v and things improved dramatically. A small 12v battery will give you perfect clean 12vdc power...the PFC quad draws about 10mA at 12v. The pots will get dirty on occasion as well--I have found that vigorously and rapidly exercising the controls stop-to-stop will clean the pot wipers and make it stop.I'm a real-world pilot with time in light singles, business jets, and heavy four-engine transports. I have not seen a flight control on the consumer market yet that can rival the PFC yoke for the feel of the real thing. It's worth some hassle to get there, IMHO. FWIW, I was at the I/ITSEC conference (big simulation industry convention) earlier this month in Orlando, and it was staggering how much systems that have little more to add than the PFC system can cost.RegardsBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300Washington, D.C.

I have a couple of PFC throttle quadrants with the digital box. My results have been pretty good. I did notice an increase in the crash on exit recently and found that my FUICP dll had been updated by one the add-on's I have purchased. I re-installed the PFC dll and accompanying 3.11 FUICP dll and it eliminated the crash on exit problem. Apparently some vendors install a new or old version of FUICP which they found most stable for THEIR plane. Wish they would tell us!BobP :)
