July 21, 201114 yr So this is what I am trying to do, or rather want to do, and this follows on from a recent topic I wrote titled 'adding realistic landmarks'; so the set up is this, I have installed as my ground textures 'Ground textures Plus' which I am quite happy with, unfortunately I would have prefered to have GE Pro but that programme does not work on my system for some strange reason, that's a long story which I have previoulsy mentioned before in the past in this forum but I am not going to go into that again. I have also got VFR Photographic scenery which I used to have installed but no longer anymore due to various reasons such as scenery load up takes so long and unless you are fairly high up then everything below is just a blur, so having non-photo scenery was what I opted for. Now, this is the tricky part as I want to add local landmarks from the AVSIM website but they all seem to be intended for VFR scenery and when I try to install these objects into my non-vfr scenery they are not correctly positoned. So I am finding myself in a bit of a dilemma as it looks like I cannot have local landmarks/scenery in my non-vfr ground textures without them being out of position.I am wondering what other people reading this do, to put it simply, if you want to install local landmarks around the places you live and you have autogen textures such as Ground Textures Plus or GE Pro etc and you manage to install the scenery/landmarks in the right place and they do not appear to be out of postition, how do you do it and where do you get them from?I know there are some programmes like EZ Scenery which lets you add various structures but they are not the same as being based on the real life ones.Unless I am looking in the wrong places, from what I can see it seems to be that you have to have VFR Scenery installed in order for these add-ons to be correctly positioned, or can anyone prove me wrong? I would love to know please! Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Packard Bell imedia S3210. AMD Athlon II X 3 425 Processor 2.70 GHz. 3 GB RAM. External hard drive 1TB. July 21, 201114 yr I'm not sure what you mean (and don't call me Shirley). :)The actual position (lat, long) of the landmarks will not change, no matter what ground textures you use - that doesn't affect them. They may not line up with what you *think* is the correct position, but they are still right where they used to be. With non-photoreal scenery that's usually about the best you can do.Hope this helps, Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
July 21, 201114 yr Author I must admit, it is difficult to describe exactly what I am trying to do. OK, as an example, I live on the coast in the UK and I want to add my local port which I have found along with many other ports in a file from the AVSIM library called uk_ports.zip, but when installed in my non-vfr scenery the ships are not correctly positioned, some may be in the sea but some may are on the land! But when I had VFR Photographic scenery installed it lined up perfectly, so I don't think it's possible to install these files into non-vfr scenery.I have probably just confused everyone again, maybe I should just make do somehow and have a think about it! Most of your add-ons like uk_ports are designed to fit the stock map and don't conform to the real world presentation...DJ
July 21, 201114 yr Agreed. When you install landmarks, you have to decide if you are going to conform to the default terrain, or to actual real world. For the former, unless someone has actually placed the 3d models, you will have to do it yourself with an object placement program (there are many available). In the latter case, you first have to obtain or construct realistic terrain. That terrain will consist of mesh (elevation data) and vectors (land/water definitions, shorelines, roads, streams, railroads, utilities). Once you have accurate terrain you can then place the 3d objects in their actual positions. Most downloads will explain if they were designed for default terrain or addon terrain, typically including specific terrain products or files designed around. scott s.
July 22, 201114 yr IF they were installed as library objects and IF the BGL file that contains the placement data contains ONLY such placement data, then that file can be opened with programs like Instant Scenery and these landmarks moved around. Not true for most addons, but true for a few.Hope this helps, Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
