Vid card bottlenecking vidcard?

Featured Replies

Hello all. I am wondering if there is any chance that my video card is creating a bottleneck in my system. My specs are: i7 2600k oc'd to 4.7ghz gigabyte p67-ud3-b3 gigabyte gtx 560ti oc 8gb corsair ram @1600 9-10-9-27 corsair H70 cooler HAF 922 case pc power and cooling 750watt psu seagate 1tb hd ...I have essentially a stable oc, but i occasionally see black squares on the ground while panning, and especially while panning around aircraft they appear where the lights are. My cfg is primarily stock, save for the highmemfix and disable preload. I have my TBM at 100. I also can't reall do more than 27fps locked; if i go higher, it stutters badly. So, I am wondering is the video card the weak link here? Or should I go to a water cooled setup? I just think I should be able to get a bit more (not a lot more) out of it...thanks in advance!

ooops sorry I meant video card bottlenecking my cpu lol my apologies!!

It's definitely an I/O bottleneck, but it could be the HD, RAM, or video RAM. The only way to know which is causing the problem would be to replace them one by one. I'd say your HD and RAM are more likely than the graphics card, a 560 Ti OC is perfect for FSX.

I see black squares occasionally as well when I have a high texture bandwidth set. Try lowering it back to default (40) and see if it improves things.

I never think to lower sliders LOL.gif

Thanks for the replies! I will try the TBM sometime tomorrow as I am limited time-wise today...and if it is, say the ram, is it that my ram is too slow?

Hmmm, toss up between RAM (lower cas would help... like 7) or video card. What resolution are you running and is it a single monitor? It's the not the 4.7GHz - I'm running @ 4GHz and it's very smooth, but I've only found I was able to achieve that by running the external limiter @ 30fps, and I also run without vsync.

Ryan, what speed and timing/latency ram are you using?

1866 mhz @ 9 10 9 27 1TI sorta regret it and next time would get cas 7 @ 1600mhz.

what makes you regret it Ryan? you can always try to lower the MHz and tighten the timings

Well because I'm not super knowledgeable on the RAM timing subject and most users recommend cas 7, and I've found more users prefer lower timings rather than faster speed. At the time of purchase I was under the impression faster speed was better for FSX.

you can tighten your timings at lower RAM speeds if you want to

...And how do you go about it? Right now, I have the same ram as Ryan, but can only run it at 1600; if I try to run it at 1866, it fails prime instantly. So, should I set the speed back to 1333 and drop the other settins one notch each? Eg. instead of 9-10-9 27 change it to 8-9-8-something??

Not sure about P95, but I had boot fails if I tried to manually enter my timings as well. The only way to do it for me was enable XMP profile 1 in BIOS. That sets all the timings per spec.I know people recommend entering all the info manually but with my BIOS it's just not feasible, or it's a classic case of PEBKAC. I'm really a n00b when it comes to this DIY PC setup stuff. I think if I had the money (let me rephrase that- wife's approval) to maintain the system with yearly upgrades I'd feel a lot more comfortable than 3-5 years in between major upgrades hehe.I spent way too much time in BIOS just getting to a mere 4GHz - I guess I got tired of it and just wanted to fly. Sure, I wish I was at 4.8GHz like most of the guys here but I'm very happy @ 4GHz. Maybe someday I'll get the guts to screw with BIOS again. And I checked CPUz and it was showing my RAM at 2T command. I swear it's at 1T in BIOS. Oh well.I'm special when it comes to BIOS stuff. I need someone with SB experience, to literally come to my house, and show me around my BIOS (it's the older style), and have the patience to setup my PC. I'm pretty sure I could get to 4.8GHz, just not sure how.
