CTD Crash Fixed

Featured Replies

I do lots of flying in the Innbruck area at eevery season and have my LOWI landclass files (designed for FS2002) installed. I had no unexplainable CTD so far. The only CTDs I had were allways clearly related to add on gauges.Wolfgang

Here's an update:I flew around Sion, an area where problems had been reported... Had the date set to Jan 01, 2003... It was quite beautiful, btw... Haven't done any winter flying yet, so I was really surprised at the icy runway...nice touch...Anyway, I flew around the airport perimeter, did a touch n go, with the default landclass with no issues. I then built a landclass file which covered the area within 4 or so nm of Sion... No CTD....I did cause a CTD when I tested a known issue for reference--turning off render to texture while using Chris's DXT3 high performance clouds...Don't know what to say. Sion w/landclass was the clearest example I had heard of the CTD issue, and I couldn't get one to happen. I was using the default Terrain.cfg...If ppl continue to post different scenarios, I'll try em out. Can't help but wonder whether some odd combination causes it. I will try different FS settings in my saved Sion flight, and report back...-John

ALEXThats great news Im glad I was of some help. I spent 2 long days flying the same route over and over again to finally find the culprit bgl file responcible. So far Im CTD free flying in Canada at least over the rockies and in the dead of winter. So if there is a seasonal CTD bug I havent found it here, However after reading some of the other strings I decided to go seeking CTDS and did a flight from Zurich to Brussels. I have no add on scenery for Zurich but I do have and add on Afcad for the airport. Well I thought my Dell XPS system would never stop loading. Anyways I got to flying and 50-70 miles from Brussels at 10,000 ft got my CTD and everything froze without warning. So I went back and removed the afcad for zurich and then disengaged EBBR2002 and the 2004 addon afcad for it and went back to re flying the route. well FS9 loaded up lickity split in Zurich no problems and smooth. things were going along nicely when bam I got the CTD again at the exact same location. Now Im going to load up fs9 without any afcads and fly the route again and see what happens. I will keep in touch.Don

Here's an experiment that worked. Last night I had repeated CTDs on the approach part of a flight from Stockholm to Malmo using PMDG 737, Swedeflight Pro scenery and AI. I have made this flight many times before in FS9 without a problem. Fortunately, I had saved a mode just prior to the CTD. I tried everything, different aircraft, addon scenery off, AI off, everything ( I do have the seasonal fix installed). Always the same crash. The last thing I tried was reloading the same flight with full addon scenery, back to the PMDG and full AI. However, the one difference, I changed the date to summer...June 25th. Perfect flight no problems. Here is a case where the season is the culprit. If I don't use winter or late fall or early spring I'm okay.If anyone can fix this glitch, we'll all be jumping up and down!Lee

The combination of factors causing CTD's it's going to be a hard one to track down. This is what happened to me, if it can be of any help:I got my first endless sequence of CTD's taking off from Zurich (real date/real weather). I was using Jon Murchison's BAe 146-200 with a freeware panel found at Avsim (rjpnl2.zip).By changing plane to the default 737, I was able to fly a few minutes longer, but the CTD happened anyway.I was able to use the BAe 146-200 ONLY WITH BLACKED-OUT PANEL (i.e. removing all gauges lines in panel.cfg). Although, I didn't fly long enough in that situation to see if the CTD would occurr again (flying with NO instruments gets boring pretty soon). So here I go, and a couple of days later I decide to take off from LIMF (Torino, Italy), my hometown airport. I'm using Jon Murchison's BAe 146-200 once again.Once again, right before rotation or a few thousand feet off the ground...CTD.In all of these occasions, I had a flight plan loaded which was including LSZH (Zurich) as a departure or arrival airport. In all of these occasions I tried every possible combination in terms of landclass, afcad files, terrain mesh, weather, AI, you name it. A situation with ALL default files (ALL add-ons removed, ALL left overs cleaned out, sceney.dat files recreated, default fs9.cfg) would STILL give me CTD's.So yesterday (Dec. 30th) I go back to LIMF, and take off from RWY36 with the default Lear, Fair weather theme and NO FPL loaded. And there I go; RWY HDG to FL5000, turn right HDG 090, climb to FL20000...No CTD so far. I'm getting excited, so I start flying freely over the alps. Gee, I say to myself, this is what I've been missing!Air outside is cold and crisp, glaciar planes open up below me,glittering under the sharp winter sun-light.My engines purr, and so do I,in my warm and cozy cockpit.A distant flickeringdraws my eyes to look up:on the other end of a long contrail,a big metal bird is cruising, high and fast.OK, I THINK, THIS IS IT!So I go back to LIMF, RWY36. This time I'm on the default 737, destination NOWHERE. Everything goes smooth as before, so halfway through my extacy I decide to open an IFR FPL to, guess where, Zurich!Right after Zurich center has tracked me and assigned me to ILS RWY16, I start my descent to FL 19000 as per instructions. All of a sudden the dream is over. CTD.Ok, this is beginning to wreck my nerves. At this point I decide to dare, and create a flight starting from Zurich, default Lear, Fair Weather theme.I once again try ALL possible combinations software-wise (ALL add-ons removed, ALL left overs cleaned out, sceney.dat files recreated, default fs9.cfg).Now this is what happens:flight simulator ALWAYS kicks me back to the desktop 56% through flight loading. EVERYTIME.I don't even get to see the runway, this time.I could nail all this down to Zurich, if other people wouldn't be getting CTD's in completely different areas and situations. So now, for those who enjoy the sim, you can understand my frustration. This is indeed a tough one, and I'm beginning to loose hope.As Lee said,If anyone can fix this glitch, we'll all be jumping up and down!Let's keep in touch,Luca

Hi Luca,Just to keep you informed:I have now re-flown both my flights where CTD occured - once approaching Newark, and once approaching Barcelona, with the same weather, aircraft etc - but this time before setting off I deleted the downloaded AFCAD files I had installed for these 2 airports. No CTD!!I am going to try an IFR flight from Amsterdam to Zurich!?I will report back to you on the outcome of this flight, although it may be tomorrow!Regards,Alex.

Great! Thanks Alex, and please let me know.Getting rid of AFCAD files hasn't done the trick for me.Let's keep in touch.Take your time.A Happy and "CTDless" New Year!Luca

Happy New Year all lets all hope its a lot less frustating.Just to keep you all up to date I have been successful in recreating a CTD on a flight from Zurich to Brussels following an IFR flightplan at 32000 ft. AT exactly 61 miles from Brussels I get the same CTD for some UNKnown module everytime no matter what I do. I have been flying in real time, I removed all my afcads and all scenery files for the area and still I get the bug. It would appear afcads are not the cause for this ctd. Gonna go and try flying the same route now in the summer and see what happens. Good work all, your efforts to identify the cause or causes of these ctd's certainly helps programers in coming up with a fix. 61 MIles from Brussels I didnt see any mountains just snow.Don

Chris glad to have you on board and love your clouds. First off my system is brand new Dell XPS out of the box and I have never had to tweek anything. Up until just recently i have been flying without any problems whatsoever. I was able to isolate a CTD to an afcad bgl as being the cause of a different ctd however this CTD I have been experiencing is not caused by any afcad. I have included screen shots that will show you the flight setup and the terrain on 21Dec and then on the 22Dec. Note the difference. First I set up the flight from Zurich to Brussels with FS9 fair weather in a default 737 for 32000 ft.with the date 7AUG03. I flew with no problems whatsoever and landed in Brussels. I saved this flight at a point 85 miles from Brussels as flying in present time I had earlier got a CTD at the 61 mile mark consistantly. Without changing anything but the date I would resume the flight from the saved mark to see what happened. I did this 4 more times at different dates,7Nov,28Nov,7Dec and 21Dec03 and like the first flight had no problems. Then I switched to the 22Dec and for the first time noticed snow on the ground(see pic) I flew along from the saved flight to a point exactly 61 miles from Brussels and got hit by the CTD (see pic). MY afcads were all installed and I have no mesh or scenery in this location. ATC and AI planes all active in all tests. I do have bluesphere textures installed. This is definately the seasonal CTD I was looking for. What I cant understand is why here at this point and all the time.Don MY SYSTEMDell XPS sytemPent4 at 3GHz w/800MHz front side bus512 MB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400 MHz120 GB ATA Hard driveWindows XP home edition:-hmmm

Heres the other pictures as mentioned in post#23. The first is the scenery on th 22DEC showing the snow and the 2nd is my frozen screen as a result of the CTDDon

I think we're just going to have to skip winter flying in FS9 until a fix comes along.Too bad...Do we need to start a serious letter or e-mail writing campaign to MS. Perhaps if we all do it, nicely and politely, they'll get the message?Lee

CAn confirm, CTD about that distance south of EBBR//Mike

Hey Don!I wish I would have spotted this message earlier so I could be of help earlier. Based on previous experiemce with CTD's and other issues, it is very likely that your CTD issue is not attributable to a "bad" AFCAD file; it is very likely caused by a bad landclass or terrain mesh file. If you want to try, go ahead and only disable your Addon Scenery, or just the folder where your lanclass files or terrain mesh files reside and you'll see what I mean. Two of the files that have historically caused a lot of "hearburn" with CTD's is the railroad texture addon (Sorry! Forgot the author's name), and a specific landclass file available for one of the Canadian airfields (I believe it is for Victoria).Hope this helps!Dennis D. Mullert

Sincerely,

Dennis D. Müllert

Luca,If you're having troubling flying over the Alps during the later Fall, Winter, or early Spring, then you may have the seasonal CTD that is generated by a conflict between the airport aprons and the local landclass. For one solution, see http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...64441&mode=full .This is the "German" solution--that modifies the terrain.cfg file and substitutes a simple airport apron rather than allow the blending with the local landclass. If you have not tried it, give it a go.Note well. This solution DOES NOT solve the full range of CTDs--only the specific ones having to do with seasons and texture blending. (Most of the participants in this thread have already tried the "German" solution for their specific problems--to no avail. However, it DOES solve a particularly vexing class of problems that sound very much like the ones you describe.Best,Mike MacKuen

Dennisthanks for the reply but I did solve my CTD problem by throwing out an afcad file I had for the kelowna airport which I was about 50 miles away from everytime I had the CTD.. since then Im flying the rockies in the dead of winter CTD free. Since I know these things are frustrating for all finding the solution for a CTD < I had to share with othersDon
