August 11, 201114 yr Greetings all, I just took off on a flight, however I'm having problems getting the AP to work. Both FDs and the AT are on, and the LNAV/VNAV are engaged. I don't have a yoke/joystick at this time, so that's not the issue. Here's a screenshot, perhaps someone can help. Many thanks. Ron Priever
August 11, 201114 yr It is not clear what your problem is. Are you flying the tutorial? If not, have you programmed a flight flan? Have you pressed the cmd button to engage the autopilot? What is the autopilot not doing that you want it to do? Henri Henri Arsenault
August 11, 201114 yr Author Henri, I'm flying KLAS-KLAX. The route is BOACH4.HEC.RIIVR2. No issues programming it into the FMC. I keep hitting the CMD button but nothing is happenning. Ron Priever
August 11, 201114 yr this might sound obvious once you hear it, but it looks like you have not hit the CMD button. EDIT: nevermind, I have no clue Dan Johnston

Dissengage both lanav and vanav abd engage the autopilot. Then re-engage lnav and vnav. Frederic Steiner.
August 11, 201114 yr Ron, Are you following the Flight plan shown in FMC manually and trying engage the AP? try this..... August 11, 201114 yr What happens if you turn off "Realistic AP Engagement" in the FMC equipment options?
August 11, 201114 yr Author First of all make sure your landing gear is up and flaps too !! Dissengage both lanav and vanav abd engage the autopilot. Then re-engage lnav and vnav. Finally got it to work. I would guess the issue was that the AP doesnt work unless flaps are fully up. Where in the FCOM does it say that? Thanks for the tip. Ron Priever

Thanks for the tip.Nothing to do with your flaps .It's just that in the pic they were at 1. I think you should try the test flight a few more times. It looked from your pic that you should have engaged the auropilot sooner !! Fred. Frederic Steiner.

I was trying to engage the AP earlier, but it wouldnt kick in. That's when I took for screen shot. Obviously, it was because the flaps were still at "1". And dont worry. I have about 30 test flights lines up. Ron Priever
August 15, 201114 yr Hey, I have the same problem frequently. Haven't considered the flaps though, but that really never entered my mind...Will test it tomorrow! Why should one not be able to engange with flaps down..?
August 15, 201114 yr I often engage the autopilot at 400 feet so flaps are not the issue. Is the airplane trimmed before you try to engage?Dan.
August 15, 201114 yr Author I often engage the autopilot at 400 feet so flaps are not the issue. Is the airplane trimmed before you try to engage? Dan. I believe the aircraft trim is the culprit. Since my first incident, I've engaged the AP with both flaps fully retracted, and partially extended. I believe the issue (and the answer) is that the AP doesnt engage unless it's in somewhat proper trim. Also, if you dont have control of the plane (ie, trying to gain control while turning excessively left/right, elevators up/down), the AP won't engage. I read about this somewhere in the manuals, but can't remember where. Ron Priever
August 15, 201114 yr Yeah, you need to set the take off trim and also make sure it is still in trim before AP engagement. If you are flying manually using the flight director bars, ensure that everything is centered and release any pressure on the controls before you press that button.Dan.
