MegaScenery Earth - California

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried this yet? It would be nice to have all of Central California as the valley is quite fun to fly. So please advise and thanks!Mark

Been using MegaSceneryEarth for a year or two with no problems. My last/current post in the screen-shot forum features the great valley, please check it out. Btw...there should be a good sale this Labor Day weekend at PC Aviator (usually 50% off).

Photographic scenery is very nice as long as you're aware of the limitations and the fact that you're flying over a "flat" photograph rather than actual 3D scenery. I was a huge fan of photoreal scenery in FS2004, owning nearly every Megascenery product and many others. Photo scenery does look stunning from 3-4 thousand feet, and the framerate you get is crazily high compared to regular scenery with all its autogen and other 3D details. But with FSX, I feel that you're missing out on a lot scenery features by replacing everything with a flat photograph. But it's mostly a matter of personal preference. Both "regular" landclass/vector based scenery and photographic scenery have their pros and cons. BTW, you can get parts of California in this freeware scenery:http://www.blueskyscenery.com/CA.html

I have all MSE available for Arizona, California, Washington, Oregan, Mass, Rhode Island, NY, NJ and Delaware. I also have MSX for Dallas, So Cal and Oahu. Along with this I have FS Genesis mesh for the USA along with all the FSG mesh products available for FSX. Jimmi is right that photo scenery is a photo and flat, but the photo is laid over terrain that that does bring out some detail. The default FSX mesh (terrain detail) is not that good. When you add the FS Genesis mesh to the mix the level of detail that you can see is amazing. I love to fly over the Arizona and California deserts, if you have MSE, FSG and a great monitor/GPU the terrain detail that you can see in my opinion is just stunning! I also like to fly over NY, NJ, etc. since these areas are flatter by nature the terrain detail is not like flying over the mountains out west, but the detail is still stunning. I have heard reports that not all MSE products are good, one that comes to mind is Florida, there are areas that were covered by clouds when the photos were taken so you need to look on the MSE website at the area you are interested in before you buy.

I have alot of the MSE but usually only use it in the summer months and disable it in the fall, winter and spring due to the lack of seasonal color changes and snow cover.Other then that its great. I was pretty impressed seeing my old house flying over western West Palm Beach. Was pretty easy to pick out old familiar landmarks.

shameless plug alert!! :) I just started adding Al Wheeler's airport scenery to my MSE Airports resource site - he has redone several central California coast airports to align with MSE ground textures. It will really help make full use of the MSE scenery. Those of you who say you have the NJ/DE textures will find lots of new airports to fly to as well. See my sig for the site link. It's going to take me several more days to get all of Al's airports added to the site but you download them all together anyways so no big deal there. I'm just adding them individually so you can see where they are located on the map, what they look like, etc. I'm also releasing Voicepacks for the airports to replace the phonetic call outs.

I have tried Megascenery Earth California as I live and fly here in the real world all the time. I was not that impressed. The original Megascenery Southern California is great as all the tiles were hand manipulated and included auto gen and night effects, etc. The Megascenery Earth variety is nowhere near that quality and the tiles can be really washed out or have major color transitions on them Right now I use Blue Sky Scenery Photo scenery for the areas I fly mostly. Their California photo scenery can be found here.... http://www.blueskyscenery.com/CA.html It is free so that is another bonus though I have downloaded so much of his photo scenery that I have donated money to him several times.
