January 12, 200422 yr Great job! I also found that by creating the 1 foot layer at the bottom of the overcast layer you lose the IMC hole when in the clouds. You can also put a second 1 foot layer on top, but that seems to slow down the frame rates.
January 13, 200422 yr Thanks for the cloud changes!I went back to FS2002 for my IFR approaches since FS9 just didn't do a good enough job simulating overcast, but now I can finally justify using FS9 for IFR as well as VFR flying now! Thanks for the cloud files!Scott :-)
January 13, 200422 yr WOW John! This works very well. The problem is i use AS2004 a lot which doesn't simulate this but i suppose you can't have everything!
January 13, 200422 yr That's good to hear that you finally uploaded your overcast solution. I have been wating for it for a looong time: :-)http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=160066&page=Wolfgang :-wave
January 13, 200422 yr John,Thanks for the fix. Now, for us really computer brain dead types, exactly what do I do to use them? I downloaded them. How do I save the old ones? Rename them? Move them to another file? Then I just copy and then paste the new ones into each of the old ones? Is that correct? Sorry to be so slow. Roger
January 13, 200422 yr Easiest way to back them up is to create a folder in the texture folder called "backup cirrus", then copy the old overcast bitmaps into that folder. Then, copy the new ones into the texture folder and overwrite when prompted....-John
January 13, 200422 yr Commercial Member Hi all,We are working on implementing a similar solution/effect (been doing so for quite some time), but there are some technical issues to work out in this.. look for it in AS2004 soon :)Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyhttp://www.hifisim.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
January 13, 200422 yr (sigh) Damian, you really seem like a decent guy but so far Activesky 2004 has made a lot of promises but has realized few results in dealing with the extremely flawed FS9 weather engine. Your original release of AS2004 was specifically advertised as being able to deal with the overcast sky problem but it didn't deliver. The latest beta patch helped with the winds transitions situation (I believe you mentioned that you're still going to have to rewrite the entire winds aloft engine at this point?) but not with the overcast problem. Weather/visibility transition issues still prevail with AS2004 as I'm sure you are aware of from the threads on your AS2004 forum. I'm not out to get you, believe me. But it irks me when you pop in on this thread promising Activesky will 'fix' everything when so far your program hasn't measured up to it's hype.
January 13, 200422 yr John and all,Probably a silly question here, but the fix will only be effective if one uses the 3d clouds?I compromised those for extra frames, but the see-through 2d clouds are really annoying. will the modified clouds help those who use 2d as well?Thanx//Mike
January 13, 200422 yr I don't use any 2-d clouds, so I can't answer for certain, but I believe my solution will work just fine, since the cirrus clouds are rendered as 2-d clouds. In fact, the cirrus clouds alone (without the extra layer of cumulus or stratus) work well enough at producing overcast, except for the "seam" I note in my docs. -John
