September 7, 201114 yr Hi guys. I have a situation I don't know how to handle:There is a STAR I fly that specifies in the chart that you must cross the initial fix at or above a certain FL, but by then RC has ordered me to descend bellow that. What should I do?
September 8, 201114 yr How far out is this STAR crossing restriction? You can use from the preflight RC Controller page selecting NOTAMS. RC, with the exception of the the strict RC issued crossing restriction, lets you deviate from RC commanded altitudes somewhat prior to 40 nm out where the fixed RC crossing restriction occurs. Can you provide a link to the STAR you are using?
September 8, 201114 yr Author Hi. Thank you for replying.I'm sorry but the only link I can provide is http://www.vatmex.com/charts/MMMX.zip .They are the current STARs to MMMX, where you are supposed to cross DATUL, TUMAL, KOBEK or AVSAR (depending on the STAR) at FL300. The aforementioned are newish waypoints created by someone who thought it was a good idea to have all arrivals to Mexico City to be from the north, and they don't figure in FSX's default map. They work for both runways (05R and 23L) and you start your descent upon crossing them.Hope this makes sense to you. Thanks again.
September 8, 201114 yr The MSA RC has for MMMX is about 11,500. Your STAR problem comes before LUCIA where the minimum on the STAR is 13,000 and RC wants a lower crossing restriction. Since the MSA is so high, I'm not sure how RC would raise or handle that restriction. However the manual does state that there is an option for a restriction of unable to comply and approach will try again. I'll point jd to this.
September 8, 201114 yr About 25 nm radially. I found another resource I have. how far is lucia from mmmx?
September 8, 201114 yr Author Thank you for your time and help.As you can see from the chart ronzie put on the post right above this one (thanks, BTW) one is supposed to cross the arch formed by KOBEK, TUMAL, AVSAR and DATUL at FL300, but by then RC has ordered me to descend bellow that.
September 8, 201114 yr Using a pilot's discretion descent should help with that somewhat but that delayed descent will probably not get you over that restriction at DATUL. FL300 is seen as the higher level ATC vertical strata class and I believe NOTAMS are not available that high. DATUL is 85 miles out from the airport though and maybe NOTAMS may be recognized if preflight you have selected that option in RC. Other than that, I was also concerned about the 11,000 and 12,000 foot restrictions at 40 nm out, also too low. Mexico has a high transition level I believe so those restrictions will be in feet 15 nm before Luvia VOR. That approach is fairly steep. Some users have found relief for Chilean coastal airports in crossing the Andes enroute. Also try the can not comply option. Page 46 in the rcv43 manual described the descent strata classifications. Page 50 describes the NOTAMS affect on descents.
September 8, 201114 yr Just to add what Ron, added that can happen and the best way to fly a STAR is to use NOTAMS. This is one thing we want to work on in V5. Bob
September 9, 201114 yr Author The problem is that the NOTAM doesn't kicks in that high or that far from the airport. Here is what happened:At about 40NM from KOBEK I was already instructed to decend bellow FL300. The PD option bought me a few miles, but it was not until around 30NM from LUCIA that I got the NOTAM warning. By then I was decending thru FL290 and was told to cross40nm from MEXICO at 15000, which I couldnt do because the next restriction on the chart, at SL30C, asks me to fly at FL250 and the next one, LUCIA at 16000.Fortunatelly at around 25NM from LUCIA I was told to contact approach, so I was able to ask for the full IAP approach and flew the rest of the app as published.
September 10, 201114 yr Author It was, and I had to take it. I couldn't have complied even if I wanted to.
