September 27, 201114 yr Fellow Pilots,Recently purchased yoke and pedals for the NGX, and looking for some form of guide on how to use the rudder pedals correctly. The yoke (CH Eclipse) is a replacment yoke, but the pedals are the first ever purchase.Where I am having a problem is co-ordination between using yoke and when do I use the rudder ? When turning I have found difficult to get precise co-ordination, and maybe somone can offer some pointers.Have been practising manual landings @ LXGB Gibraltar, which is an excellent airport to practise, My final approach is okay using the pedals, but my banking and manouvering is rubbish, so would appreciate any feedback. September 27, 201114 yr I don't use the rudder when flying airliners except for maintaining the centerline and adjusting for crosswinds on landings. Shane Gavin
September 27, 201114 yr Author Thanks Shane, maybe that is my problem, using the rudder when I shouldn't System: MSFS2024, ASUS Rog Stryx Z790-A, Intel i9-14900KF, Asus ROG Ryujin III 360 , Asus Hyperion Case,Rog Stryx 4090 OC, Samsung 970 EVO M.2 SSD, 1Tb Samsung 860 EVO SSD,64Gb G Skill Memory, Asus Aura 1200W Gold PSU,Win 11 ,LG C4 48" 4K OLED Screen., Airbus TCA Full Kit, Stream Deck XL. September 27, 201114 yr Thanks Shane, maybe that is my problem, using the rudder when I shouldn'tYup! The yaw damper does the work during most maneuvers in the NGX. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
September 27, 201114 yr Author Ok thanks Zach. Keep the feet on the ground then. September 28, 201114 yr By the way, the NGX is the only Microsoft FS aircraft that has rudder auto-coordination as far as I know... Teo Halfen Teo Halfen
September 28, 201114 yr Besides the above, I use it mainly on approach, esp in xwinds. The thing I hate is when you put in the footbrakes, sometimes (maybe because of calibration issues) it'll pick up one and not the other so you start slewing either left or right. Still though...wouldn't go without it. J Thomas YBBN
September 28, 201114 yr Most of the time on an airliner you would hardly touch the rudder pedals for flight, even when hand flying, since the ailerons, elevator, and yaw damper system will do pretty much all the work for you in a turn. So except as a convenient place to rest your feet, or to operate the wheel brakes, about the only time you would really need to use the rudder for flight control is when making a crosswind landing or fighting a crosswind on the take off roll, when it is of course safe to use large rudder inputs because you are unlikely to overload the vertical stabiliser at those kind of speeds - unless you are very clumsy that is - i.e. avoid large deflections one way, followed by sudden large deflections the other way, since this can overload the tailfin of an aeroplane, even at low airspeeds, by 'levering it off' in the same way that you might rock a tough piece of wood backwards and forwards quickly in order to snap it when you'd never be able to bend it once and snap it. Of course the risk of shear loads on the tail surface don't really matter in a sim, but since you may also fly real aeroplanes, that'd be a very bad habit to pick up, which is something to watch out for with PC flight sim rudder pedals, as they will teach you 'muscle memory' which can translate to real life when you are flying a real aeroplane, so picking up bad habits is a big no-no! You might be interested to know that the 737 actually doesn't really need a yaw damper in most cases, since it is very stable anyway, except the 600 NG, which is famously not very stable, and one of the (several) reasons for its lack of popularity LOL. Stability notwithstanding, since it has swept wings, it is not impossible to get a 737 into a dutch roll, so a yaw damper is fitted to the aircraft, but it is mainly for passenger comfort rather than any great necessity.
