Problems with Display in FSX (Hardware issue related)

Featured Replies

the settings were nearly maxed out at the time. I have since reduced them and the display problems still exist under the following conditions (sitting at the gate at SFO where FS dreamteam scenery was once installed) If I relocate to a different airport, the problems disappear. but it still doesnt explain why the simulation froze over the pacific ocean with high frame rates. So once again I will go to a different airport make sure the settings are reduced and head out and see what happens. On second thought. Since FSX is a 4GB program and my ram using is showing at least 6GB of usage during flight, that could very well be the problem. I do need to use real world weather as I am flying online. I suppose I will start by reducing Autogen and traffic. Yep I reduced the settings to minimal and its still happening. I really dont want to go to the conclusion that my $300 card is dead. Every other program functions just fine.

In my experience a recoverable display driver error is invariably a sign that the GPU is (i) over-heating or (ii) degrading. Hopefully (and usually) it's the first. To find out, force the GPU cooling fan to run at 100% all the time while FSX is flying. There are various ways to do this. The easiest is to ensure that you have installed the "Performance" options for the Nvidia control panel. These let you manipulate the fan speed by defining a profile, or directly. Or your EVGA card might have come with its own utility for doing the same thing. It is not uncommon for this problem to materialise after changing drivers: presumably, new drivers sometimes extract more performance from the GPU than the older ones, which I suppose is in fact what one would hope for from new drivers. But in doing so, they can expose problems in the hardware, especially overclocked hardware such as this. The fact that it was overclocked at the factory, unfortunately, does not stop it being overclocked. Tim

Leave the side panel from your case open and see if it helps. If so you have a heating issue.

I seriously hope its not going bad. this is a $300 card! not even 5 months old. And if it is defective Im s*** out of luck! I dont have any of the packaging. so I will bump the fan and see if the issues go away. where do I find the performance options? that is not an option in my control panel. On second thought, could it be a problem that im getting the drivers from Nvidia and not the EVGA website?

As I expected, bumping the fans made no difference. still random texture spikes appear through my aircraft. I assume the only thing left is to reinstall FSX. Perhaps it became corrupted. No matter what settings I use the problem still persists. If a reinstall does not solve the issue, I suppose I will have no choice but to go to the conclusion that my 5 month old card that has been fine until now, just fails? I dont know. very frustrating. I have a back up card from my old computer. If I have too I will use that until I can afford a new one. Btw, the temps for my card were pretty normal under full load even before bumping the fan speed. they never exceed 75C. Which is very surprising. All summer long when temperatures were well over 100F here (not inside of course) there where no problems, and the house has been much cooler since then. If anything this should have been a positive impact on the computer.

does anyone know if it is worth the shot to reinstall fsx or just go straight away and switch the cards and see what happens?

I think this is FSX and the drivers. Clean reinstall of drivers, not beta!, reinstall of both PMDG and FSX are in order. Cleaned up driver configuration with driver sweeper in safe mode is recommended too.

The drivers have been reinstalled and wiped recently. Since that did not resolve the issue, I will begin the tedious process of reinstalling fsx

Ah it ain't so tedious when you get the hang of it - I did it recently with some 30 addons, and it was a 2 hr procedure. With all the settings - I kept my fsx.cfg, my controller settings, FSUIPC settings etc. Once I copy that stuff back in, backup up previously, it was a no biggie.

it is really weird how this just happened all of sudden. I really doubt it is the card. Everything else functions just fine. No display problems or issues with other games/applications

ARGGGHH!!! Reinstall did not solve the problem. I think its time to put my short lived GTX 570 in the cemetery and grab my ATI 5770 and put it in instead. Sure Enough! It was the card, and a damn shame too, I really loved that GTX 570! But to be quite honest I dont see much of a difference with the 5770 in performance. Both Being 1GB cards there isnt much I guess?

I doubt it is your card or drivers too. You said earlier that you got rid of some of the problem by reducing the fsx sliders. AI takes up most resources so turn them all off and see what happens. I have had the system locking up with high FPS and I think I played with the memory settings in the bios and made sure they were set for the memory I have installed plus memory voltages. Best regards,Jim

We needed these beta drivers for BF3 Beta, which is over, but the RTM version will arrive Oct 25. I haven't had this issue yet but haven't played FSX as much either.
