Can really VNAV do the job?

Featured Replies

Was thinking about an approach using vnav only supported by localizer to keep the heading. I know Ryanair has published a document explaining that. Has any of you guys attempted this kind of approach and if so I have one question. The airdrome is located at sea level. (57 ft) should I then reset the mcp altitude to 0 ft' ? By the way, STAR contains already two important waypoints for making this possible I think (FF09 and RWY09)gura75

I guess that un the 737, the NGX with Collins MCP at least, you don't use LNAV/VNAV for an approach. You're use the FAC - G/P. Forgot the name of this function, BTW. One could say it's like a virtual ILS. The FMS calculates a path and a descent ramp for your approach based on runway heading and altitude, glide path angle and other factors. If you don't have a valid ILS frequency selected when intercepting the final course and you press APP on the MCP, you'll see the FAC - G/P being annunciated on the FMA. Once it is active, you'll see a LOC and G/S indication on the PFD just like if you were in an ILS, but without an ILS transmitter. I think this function is not autoland capable for obvious reasons. I bet someone with more knowledge on this can explain you much better how this feature works, but you could try searching the FCOM for more details meanwhile.

I am thinking of using VNAV down to decision altitude. taking over manually from there. There is a document describing 737 Circling Approach using VNAV:http://www.smartcockpit.com/data/pdfs/plane/boeing/b737/instructor/B737-VNAV_Circling_Approach_According_To_Ryanair_Procedures.pdf I basically wonder if one can do the same based on straight in approach. gura75

I just use lnav - change altitude level knob to get it down to the decsending altitude of your choice you want to be at 2,000agl at about 10 miles out - on final - vor loc - about 8 miles - app knob lands perfect everytime - adjust the speeds down manually with speed knob.

You should try Kabul airport approach. No ILS in FSX but good charts. Anyway...seems like one can use only vor loc if aviable to keep heading. What would be interesting is to see if VNAV is able to cope with a calulated "glideslope" given by FMC. Down to decision point. Turning of autopilot and autothrot then making manual landing.

I dont fly outside USA yes you need to have an ils runway for this to work :)
