RIP flight simulator

Featured Replies

First let me say that I am looking forward to MS Flight. I think it will be be a fun mini-sim, and I look forward to some Hawaiian GA flying sometime soon. But this recent announcement makes me pause and reflect that the amazing journey of constant improvement that we have seen in the flight simulator series is over. I first flew FS on an IBM XT in 1983 (microsoft's v1), and also had the sublogic C64 version around the same time.Every time a version since then has been released, it has been a clear evolutionary step. The sim community has known what it wants, and it has generally got at least part of this with each new release (even if we complain about what's not there!). We move forward, rather than backwards in terms of feature set.I have read the threads hoping for 'better ATC', etc in flight. I think we now know that it is not that sim. It is a different species - not necessarily better or worse in the grand scheme of the universe, but not 'our' sim that we have watched grow from the days of wireframe graphics. So I wish Flight all the best, and hope for smooth frame rates and lots of DLC.But I am also going to take a moment to remember Flight Simulator's amazing journey. Yes, it appears it may have been an evolutionary dead end, but what a great innings!RIP FS 1980-2009 (sorry i'm three years late with the flowers...only just realised today that you were gone).P.S. lockheed martin - set paddles to 200 joules - 'CLEAR'....

Well stated. I will still continue to support FSX. The addon developers have been amazing with many of their products.Best regards,Jim

Same here. I started with the C-64 version from Sublogic With a 12 inch B&W TV for a monitor. I remember paying almost 40 dollars a pop for each scenery expansion pack when they started coming out. That was alot of money for me back then too. That stuff was so Hi-Tech back then it was worth it to sacrifice some groceries once in awhile. Now that I built my new box last month my FSX got a whole new lease on life. After almost 7000 hours of flight time I cant believe what I have missed over the years running on a 2 GHZ box. So for me FSX is here to stay. I don't really care either to play a multiplayer type "game" online with a bunch of 10 year olds . My online pilot profile will remain on VATSIM.

Well stated. i don't think, however, that you have to worry about playing with a bunch of 10 year olds. They will have about as much interest in fLight as a simmer. The teenage group, I doubt, would care much for this either because it does not involve shooting something. I honestly do not know who would fly around in this thing very long, much less want to purchase anything for it to "enhance" the experience.

Yikes! You have quite a memory! I remember Sublogic but the C-64 version? LOL. I have a huge box upstairs filled with every piece of software I purchased over the 20 some years I have been flight simming. I'm positive I have the Sublogic software. I'll have to get into the attic and see what I have (someday). Anyway, totally agree with your comments.Best regards,Jim

This is actually a new beginning for me. This shifts my mind big time to a new highly cooled and overclocked PC, and a return to about all I am going to have for some time to come, FSX. I guess I will have to live with that. Let's face it, these PC's have come a long way. I waited a long time for this some improved version, but no longer. I expected a lot more, not less. Looks like a dumbed down kid's toy to me. And one even they won't think about very long. FSX is not that. MS got caught with their heads in the wrong clouds when they got whacked by Apple and Android, and in their world that's all they can think about at this point. This looks like a junior version of some kids toy aimed to satisfy the current upper managment thinking. I really don't see junior buzzing up and down Waikiki beach while he's waiting for his pizza to be delivered to his table. At least we get some better clouds since some of them actually took the mandated directive the wrong way.Bob - Las Cruces, NM

It looks like to me that Microsoft, with Microsoft Flight, is trying to pull in these age groups. I doubt the teenagers will ever jump in though in large numbers. They are too busy studying....Best regards,Jim

"I aint done yet"With addon developers constantly developing, I don't think the end of FSX Is near, you would be surprised by what ORBX can do to the globe, how ASE and REX Can patch in your environments, how Fly Tampa could give you the best airport experience, and what companies like PMDG can develop to let you see it all.Over all - I think if we try hard enough, or old FSX Will and has already started to look better than Flight.I have to ask myself an honestly question ; "How long will Hawaii entertain me?" :(

My FSX and FS2004 are alive, well, flourishing and have never worked better with the new hardware available. I plan on keeping it that way for yrs to come.
Exacly the same here. I see no point why I should jump over to Flight after I just purchased the NGX for a lot of money.

Best regards, Steffen
