February 19, 200422 yr I have just downloaded and installed these NVidia(56.55) drivers from Guru3D.Installation was relatively easy apart from the usual Microsoft dire warnings that some of the components weren't officially approved - "your System may crash" etc etc.Regarding performance - very difficult to be objective but ,using the FS 9 default flight( C172/Seatac/Day/Fair weather) as a yardstick ,I think there may be a small performance increase of the order of 1 or 2 fps . Previously ( 52.16 Drivers) I would see about 17fps whilst stationary at the end of the runway ( 2d cockpit). With 56.55 that seems to be up to 18/18.5.Not a big increase but every little helps.Take of run with 52.16 was 16-17, 56.55 gave 17-19.Once in the air I can usually get 30 locked so can't comment on any further improvement. There are some new features such as Auto-overclock ( not yet tried).Has anyone else tested them yet?DaveAMD Athlon 2000XP (@133/133)ECS K7S5A Mobo 3.1 :04/29/02 Rev BiosSiS 735 Chipset Rev 12 x 256mb DDR RAMGeforce4 Ti-4200-8x 128mb DDR AGPAGP 1.17 WHQL . 56.55 Detonator XP Drivers2 x Maxtor 40GB HDD (7200rpm)LG 8x4x32 CDRWLG 52x CDRDirect X 9.0 Windows ME(FS2002)/ Windows XP dual boot(FS9)BIOS Settings- DRAM Timing Ultra. February 19, 200422 yr I am running them currently, they do seem to run very nice for me in FS, about same IQ and FPS as with Starstorm 53.03Q (also scored about the same in benchmarks +/- some 100s). The new features are very nice such as direct resolution change and access to the GF tweakpage in the display props from the taskbar. However, I have noticed that when I am just doing regular windows work there seems to be some delays more then before when updating icons (especially in the right-click menus) and such. Mouse cursor as well seems to stop for a few mili-seconds and then jump ahead. So its a mixed bag, I hope that the wierd mouse stutters is fixed in the next 57.** versions.
February 19, 200422 yr I have switched back and forth between the 53.03s and the 56.55s twice now. I like the new features (particularly the per-application settings profiles allowing one to have different AA,AF autoload depending upon which game is running), but I find FS9 to be a touch less smooth with the 56.55s. Average FPS is about the same, but fluctuations in FPS are greater as well. I was going to post yesterday, but realized I hadn't re-built my FS9.cfg to remove duplicate DISPLAY entries, thinking maybe that was why the 56.55s were jerky - I didn't get duplicates! For some reason, FS think these are the same drivers, not detected as a new display. I think I'll wait until they're official nVidia released drivers and try again. February 19, 200422 yr When you say "re-built my FS9.cfg to remove duplicate DISPLAY entries,". How do you do rebuild FS9.cfg, I also have duplicate DISPLAY entries. Thanks BoB McDuff
February 19, 200422 yr Short answer is rename your old FS9.cfg to back it up, move it to another directory, or just delete it, the next time FS starts it will build a new one with default settings for your current drivers/video card. You'll have to set all parameters over again like screen resolution, etc.You can always use your old copy to cut and paste settings back in.Many people believe this leads to quite a performance boost.Best,sg [email protected] | 32gb RAM | EVGA GTX1080 8gb | Mostly P3Dv5 (also IL2:BoX, DCS, XP11)
February 19, 200422 yr Sg, thanks alot, thought it was somthing like that. I'll give it a shot, Thanks again, Bob McDuff
February 20, 200422 yr They worked well on my system until I tried to use the built-in "Print Screen" function or my freeware "ScreenGrabber". FS9 immediately froze and the system would not respond to ctrl-alt-del.I powered off manually, and reinstalled the 53.06 beta drivers. No such problems with these, and they are among the best I have used. I get 25-30 fps in most situations with the settings at max. February 20, 200422 yr I downloaded them and they work fine but the overclocking feature doesn't show up.
February 20, 200422 yr Overclocking WON'T Show up unless you get the Cool Bits registry file from http://guru3d.com.Then you can overclock till it melts. ;-)I was using the 45.23's as they were the last Driver I could Install with my GEForce FX5600. Others in cluding STORM would crash my system, and give me headaches... These installed right away and did make a difference for me. Much smoother, and the flickering is now gone. Rendering seems better for me as well.I suspect it was due to my Via Board as the culprit, but now everything seems ok.I have an older computer, 1.2Ghz with 512mb Ram, so tweaking is a part of it.In case you have not seen it yet, this driver supports Profiles which you can load or build with different games. There are some Pre-Loaded already but not MSFS.These drivers are also WHQL Certified for WinXP/WIn2000.Regards,Joehttp://aboutpolitics.net/images/bannerav.gif.About Politics.net - FORUMShttp://pub162.ezboard.com/baboutpolitics.Contribute to the Richard Harvey Scholarship Fund.http://www.avsim.com/pages/scholarship.shtml CryptoSonar on Twitch & YouTube.
February 20, 200422 yr I have about the same system 1.3 Ghz AMD 512mb ram.My card is a bit smaller FX5200. Care to share any of your tweaks? Thanks, Bob McDuff
