The Great Debate - Virtual vs. 2D cockpits

Featured Replies

just wondering... can you assign a key to toggle head latency on and off, pardon the pun, on the fly? i'll have to check tonight...as to the big Q, has anybody found a way to exclude views from the standard chain? i wish i could chuck that 2D thingie for good.:-lol

I used to hate the VCs in earlier flight sims such as FS2000 and Combat Flight Sim but I think the best are now much, much better than the 2D panels, especially the GA planes; if you're flying airliners then I wouldn't think you'd find VCs very useful. But those who say that all VCs are blurry have not seen the best: Flight 1, Carenado, Bill Lyons and FSD make excellent cockpits. But the freeware offerings such as Vinka, Utva, and Maule are also extremely good especially, as has been said in this thread already, when used with Active Camera. Sometimes I really think I'm flying!

I would agree with you on this. You can use the "world in a box" approach and use wide FOVs and 3D cockpits to try and create the flight deck enviroment and world in miniature. You can generate some very impressive visuals that a lot of people seem to enjoy. My personal approach is just the opposite. Because I have a pretty good collection of Go Flight gear I don't often even have the full 2D panel up as the mini-panels are often enough. Because I can do most of what I need without touching the mouse I generally just try to keep the screen clear and use it as a true "window" on the simulated scene. That allows me to use a correct FOV for my screen and eyepoint resulting in an outside view that's free of distortion and that displays corrrect presepctive and rates. If I didn't have the Go Flight gear I'd still stick with the 2D stuff and fly with the panel down as much as possable. For me it just works, allowing me to fly with better accuracy and providing more FPS to boot.TonyDigital-Flight

Marc:I agree with the "immersion" comment made in one of the first responses to your query, though I have to admit I mostly use VC's for screenshots of a more interesting perspectivewhen I replay a particularly interesting approach / landing. Most of the time I fly using the 2D panel with full internal views. I just have to have those window posts in my way and that squished forward view, otherwise I don't feel I'm really sitting in an airliner cockpit. Just take a look at some of the flight deck photos at Airliners.com - forward vis is none too great in many of our favorite heavy metal beasts.http://www.2decker.com/media/solent1-2.JPGAlex ChristoffN562ZBaltimore, MDhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/64594.jpg
