FSX FTX loss of screen? Switching bug?

Featured Replies

After going to a menu or sometimes switching to a windows application I can not get back to FSX. The screen is not there, but if I press ESC I get the options you usually would. I can end the flight. When that happens it goes back to the intro screen but there is no animation of aircraft, just the rest shows.Has anyone had this problem?I was taxiing at an Australian airport (night) after going to a Level D 767 menu (I am wondering why I am not getting the AURAL callouts before landing-altitude), and then found I lost all textures and could only see the base textures. No aircraft, no nothing.Daniel

Are you already running the magic HIGHMEMFIX=1 in the [GRAPHICS] section of your fsx.cfg? Maybe try it. Back up your current one and add that one line. Find the file at C:UsersIAF747AppDataRoamingMicrosoftFSX.I should have added that this line usually helps with all sorts of texture losses due to the weak memory management of FSX on today's scenery plus a nice plane. If you just lose the screen and receive a black FSX window, you could switch between fullscreen and windowed with Alt-Return. Do this twice and you get your initial mode back, plus a working FSX screen.

This sounds to me as if you have the fairly common UIAutomationCore.dll problem, Daniel.UIAutomationCore.dll is an API (Application Programming Interface) and "talks" between the operating system and an application: in this case between Windows 7 - 64 and FSX. Unfortunately, at the time wWindows 7 came out - FSX was "End of Life" and so this API was not tested with FSX - and it does cause a number of issues - certainly freezing and black screens. The answer to this is to use the Vista version, placing it into the root folder of FSX.You can get that version here:- http://dl.dropbox.co...in_fsx_root.dllDownload it, and rename it as "UIAtomationCore.dll" You can Rt-Click on it, and check the "Properties"The version number should be 6.0.5840.16386. This is the Vista 32-bit version, and works well with FSX.Place it into the root folder of FSX. DON'T put it anywhere else. OK?

Done. Now to testing. Will report back in the next week or so....Daniel

I have Windows 64 bit version Home Premium.Do I need a a file for the 64 bit version?Daniel

Nope: this is the one to use, Daniel. Win7 comes with version 6.1.7600.16385, and is located in a couple of C:Windows folders - which you shouldn't disturb!) .. There is also an earlier second version - 6.0.6001.1800, and then the one which we need, and which works just fine, in both 32 or 64-bit.http://dl.dropbox.co...in_fsx_root.dllInteresting - thanks - I didn't realise the link was broken. This is the correct link.Yours is the wrong version Johan. It fails almost as much as the later file. The only version which should be placed in the FSX is version 6.0.5840.16386.and this is what the correct one looks like:-http://dl.dropbox.co...ionCore_dll.jpg

Thanks Paul!I have another issue you may know about. When rotating the view around your aircraft in FSX I notice glitching video (is it v-sync?)...I thought I had set the v-sync....but it is noticeable when you do a fast turn inside the cockpit or whizz around outside. Not that I fly from outside the cockpit!!Daniel

May do, Johan, but in testing these two files - probably forty times each over two years - I can make the 18000 fail within 90 minutes, yet cannot repeat that with the 16386. I will guarantee that the 6.0.5840.16386 works every time all the time.Setup in the Leo Maddog over KSEA at 8000, heavy (ASE cloud) LOD 4.5 most other to the right, water 2x high, 45% AI (MTX) - and within 90 minutes at about 25 keypresses in the menu - she wil freeze in the VC, with sound continuing. If a key is pressed she may simply blackout.. It does not occur if I use the 16386.

Is this perhaps more of a horizontal "tearing" of the picture? If so - what GPU do you have?

I have the Nvidia (ASUS) GT550Ti 1GB card.Daniel

Good card!Ok.. the vsync is a pain, but it can be controlled to a good degree, maybe even fixed. I;ve been using the new beta drivers which were recently released for the 500 series, and they seem to have given a small percentage increase in fps in the sim, so you might try those to start with (if you haven't already!),http://www.geforce.c...s/Results/40607 (Win 7-64)and then similarly - there's an improved version of nVidia Inspector out - which allows you to get rid of that somewhat flaky FPS_Limiter02 program, as Inspector now includes it's own internal limiter:-http://downloads.gur...nload-2612.htmlHere's what it looks like on my TripleHead2Go: Note three screens, and the setting is 30 - not 90.http://dl.dropbox.co...spector1959.jpg....vSync is not inhibited via the fsx.cfg (though this works very well, but reduces fps), also AA is unchecked in the Settings->Display screen.
