March 10, 200422 yr You might find an improvement by looking at your system failure setting in XP. Go to Control Panel, then System, then in System Properties click on Advanced, then in Startup and Recovery click on Settings, then in the System failure section look to see if Automatically restart is checked. This is the default setting. If it is, uncheck it and click OK on each box. This will usually stop the computer restarting when a problem occurs but it won't stop the actual problem from occurring. If however the box is already unchecked then I'm afraid I don't know what else you can try.
March 10, 200422 yr Moderator I used to have freezes with FS2004 on my old PC but that had a lot of other programs running such as FSMeteo, Radar Contact and Project Magenta. The whole system would freeze with a buzzing from the PC speaker. Not exactly a CTD but a totally locked PC.A couple of months ago I build a new PC and with the help of a friend networked the two together. The new PC runs FS2004 and nothing else. All the other supporting programs run on the other PC with the help of WideServer / WideClient.Last weekend I flew one of my longest ever flights from London to Tokyo. An 11.5 hour flight and the system was totally stable. In fact since I've had this new PC I've not had a single lockup with FS2004.I'm just wondering if the effect of these additional programs could be causing the system to lockup. It's asking a lot of the processor to keep them all happy.Try flying with a default aircraft and default weather. I know it's not so interesting but that's how Microsoft tested it. I'm firmly of the belief that separating FS2004 from its supporting programs is the right way to go although I accept that for reasons of cost not everyone will be able to do that.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). March 10, 200422 yr I would also suggest that you try Ken Salter's FSAutoStart program available here in the AVSIM library. It reduces a lot of the background programs and services that you don't need while running FS9. The stability and performace has improved with Ken neat program. i have only had a single instance of a CTD, and I really think that was my fault changing program options of AS2004 while in flight.CheersBob
March 10, 200422 yr Now, I do not have ANY of supporting programs like FSNAV or ActiveSky.I have just all of Simflyers sceneries, FlyTampa products, EGLL PRO and some freeware scenery stuff. I do not have any add-one MESH or Terrain,The funny thing is crashes do not happen during approaches to those sceneries. It usually happens in the middle of the flight when the picture is smooth and FPS is up to the limit. Also, I do not use PMDG or PSS stuff as they hardly use their own modules. (100 BUCKS is wasted away!!!!!!!)
March 10, 200422 yr Moderator DMT,Try changing the following settings for your 9800. I'm using the Omega Catalyst 4.2 drivers.Wait For vertical Sync: Application Preference.TRUFORM: Always Off.I've seen these crashes on a friend's system with Madeira scenery enabled. Turning it off cured the problem. You might try temporarily disabling your addon scenery and see if that makes any difference.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). March 10, 200422 yr Ray,Thank you very much for response. As far as Madeira concerned, I believe that this is issue related to Simwings' scenery itself than to hardware/software.As I remember, they confirmed graphic issues with FS2002 sceneries and released some patches for them.
March 10, 200422 yr Moderator DMT,Thanks for bringing these updates to my attention. I'll let my friend know about them.I hope you get your problems resolved. Computers can be great but they can also be a real pain.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). March 10, 200422 yr Never mind all that. Get a decent power supply. Bet your 350 watter is the problem. FS pushes the system harder than just about anything else, and the PSU probably gets all hot and bothered and cops off. Radeons are a renowned current-sucker and the rest of the system is probably sucking juice like Anna-Nicole at a Baby Cham convention. If you go to 400 or more I would bet that the CTD's would disappear.Allcott
March 10, 200422 yr I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with power supply.IL2 Forgotten Battles - is a resources'HOG. FS9 is a simpliest Nintendo game in contast with IL2. Meanwhile it is pretty stable and I've never had problems with it.
March 11, 200422 yr Allcott, your post is hysterical, I'm still chuckling away.Lee Lee H i9 13900KF 64GB Ram 24GB RTX 4090
March 11, 200422 yr Do you start FS with the default flight (with engines shut down and batteries off for cold and dark) then change to your desired airplane at the start screen? Or do you save your last flight with your last airplane in its last state. Cause if you do, that may be causing your problems. While it doesn't cause my computer to restart, It does cause the zulu time to change whenever I fly through a time zone. The Zulu time is supposed to remain the same while the local time changes. But when the Zulu time changes, it causes a complete texture reload, and completely messes up my timing for my flight with Flight Tracker.Always starting with the default flight at KSEA does not cause that problem.Just a thought.
March 11, 200422 yr Yep, I have Cessna at KSEA as a default plane on start-up.Also, i forgot to add that I run FS9 in "window" mode for the best FPS performance. An hour ago I changed XP style to Windows classic and it seems like FS9 begins to run little bit smoother. In addition, I'm trying to experiment with FSAutoStart and I have some questions.Since I'm a usual dial-up user and my PC is not connected to any sort of network, could I simply turn all the services off (except Telephony)? Also, what is the purpose of rundll32.dll module. Could I shut it down? Thanks in advance for your help.
March 11, 200422 yr Moderator DMT,RunDLL32.dll is the screensaver / power saving module. If you switch off the screen saver/disable power saving it will not load. However, it can be safely shut down if you wish. It does reduce the number of stutters.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England).
