Something strangely familiar about Flight

Featured Replies

It struck me as I was giving Flight another try tonight that it reminds me of another Microsoft title, aside from FSX:Freelancer!

Many elements seem to borrow from Freelancer -- the mouse-centric flight controls, a lot of the keyboard controls, the ability to take missions within a free flight framework.I wonder if anyone from the Freelancer team was involved in Flight.

Not sure what about this seems even remotely similar to Flight?

Off the top of my head:The nuances of the mouse-based flight control, both in the exterior and interior model. I remember that was heralded (and despised by a few) as quite an innovation back in 2003.Some keyboard presets are also the same (W & S for throttle, for example), althought that's probably a coincidence. An open sandbox mode that incorporated optional missions.A gameplay experience that invited exploration and the chance to experience the fun of flying around that didn't involve a great deal of complexity. It might be more apparent to those who played Freelancer. It's a great game.

Well Freelancer was / is also a Microsoft game, it's not that surprising that design features that were found to work well in Freelancer would be carried over to Flight if the same functions needed to be fulfilled. If you've already designed a control scheme to use the mouse to control a craft that moves through a 3D-world, and it works, why re-invent the wheel?

I think Flight is the flight simulation equivalent of Test Drive Unlimited. Both are even set on Hawaii.

I dunno. With the corepropdefs.pak file hinting at hidden features like ATC and flight planning, I wouldn't rule out laser turrets just yet.1.gif
