Selection of Aircraft in FSX

Featured Replies

When I attempt to change an Aircraft in FSX, I am presented with the usual list of Aircraft. However, in my /SimObject/Airplanes folder there are many more aircraft listed than appear in the Aircraft selection page. I have not been able to detect a reason for some aircraft being presented for selection and others not being presented. Does anyone know why?

Hi,Please note that you posted this in the Letters to the Editorial Staff of AVSIM forum. We do have a FSX forum further down the page!!Some planes may be AI planes.Make sure the Show Variations box is checked On, on the Aircraft screen.

One moment while I transfer you to the FSX forum. Welcome to AVSIM btw!

Sincerely,

If some files are missing in certain aircraft folder, that aircraft won't be displayed in the list. For example, if you have a 747 folder without aircraft.cfg, then FSX is not able to detect this aircraft. Or maybe a missing .mdl/.air/panel.cfg/sound.cfg can lead to this problem. If it is a addon aircraft, you can re-install it. If it is a default aircraft, you may need to run "repair" from FSX DVD.

No, that is not true. The only file FSX looks for is a panel.cfg file.

Hi there,Those [additional] planes that appear in your SimObjects/Airplanes directory are typically FSX's AI airplanes- the ones that the program has flying, taking off, landing, etc., out and about as Jim referenced above.Blue skies, Rusty

Hi Rusty:Well, that could be the in some cases, however, I have aircraft that originated with Orbx, Avalon, and others (such as the Maule) that appear to be from random sources. Oh, the Maule is discussed in the Learning Center's Aircraft Information page(s), as though it was available for flying - but it does not appear on the aircraft selection page! So, it appears that there must be another reason why at least some of these aircraft are not available. But thanks for the response!Joe ShotwellEldorado, Texas

If you have FSX Standard edition the Maule (and the Goose) is included for AI use only.To be flyable you have to have ponied up for FSX Deluxe.regards,Joe

Hi Joe:Thanks for the info. As it happens, the first FSX I purchased was the Deluxe version, but I soon discovered that it wouldn't do everything I wanted (or it lacked in someway that I no longer remember), so I purchased the Standard version and the Acceleration version. It makes absolutely no sense that EVERY VERSION of FSX doesn't have exactly the same features (maybe)! Or maybe I should have said, there should be ONLY ONE version of FSX.However, all this does not explain why the FTX, Avalon, and random others, aren't available in FSX, unless MicroSoft has included some bit of code that prevents any aircraft but theirs from being available!Joe ShotwellEldorado, Texas

The Deluxe is more complex than Standard so you went backwards there. I would bet that the FTX, Avalon and random others would show up in FSX if installed correctly and are full planes. There is no sinister code in FSX.
