March 27, 201214 yr Thanks for taking the efforts to explain TrackIR. I checked out the videos..But my POVs give me the exact same results, without paying $149 for more hardware (my Saitek Flight Control System was only $99).I've used POVs to adjust my view for as long as I can remember, so (for me) using the POVs are second nature. While planing a sim, I don't even think about pressing the POVs, and I'm pretty sure that I can do everything just as fast as I would be able to if I was using TrackIR. Plus, it would be yet another thing that I would have to mess with (and I'm not really into hardware gadgets) . . . and it appears that users become rather dependent on TrackIR . . . to the point that they feel handicapped if a sim doesn't support it. I can certain understand the appeal, but I just don't think I would personally gain anything with TrackIR. ~ Arwen ~ Home Airfield: KHIE
March 27, 201214 yr I've never used TrackIR, so I'm having a difficult time understanding how it is any different from what you have available when using dual POV hats and a few joystick buttons assigned to views. Please understand that I'm not doubting you, as there seems to be a lot of demand for TrackIR support. I just can't get how maneuvers would be any easier.I can "look around" and move my virtual eyepoint just fine with my POVs ...Well, try this. While sitting at your computer desk, "lock" your neck muscles so that your head is pointed straight ahead. Now, with your hand on the joystick, move the POV hats and synchronize your actual head movements to the directions you are pushing the hats and only move your head at the speed Flight moves your view around with the hats. Look all around the room, including moving your head forward, back, up, down, and side to side. Then, take your hand off the joystick and look around just by moving your head. Move your head around as fast as you want, in any direction you want, without the limitations of pressing the hat switches. That's the same difference in-game.
March 27, 201214 yr Hey no worries,Just like a yoke versus a joystick, or even the Flight program itself, I recognize Track IR is not going to be for everyone.I can uncategorically state though in my case, there is no way I can come anywhere near to doing what Track IR does, by using a POV hat, and realize that even more now that I have to use a POV hat in Flight. I too utilize two hats for viewing, one for panning, the other just below and to the left of it, for changing all my eyepoint views. Don B
March 27, 201214 yr One thing POVs do not give you is feedback on where your eyepoint is aimed. I like to do aerobatics and need to shift my eyepoint quickly and frequently. the POV is clumsy when no part of the aircraft is in view and you aren't sure if you are looking straight up or slightly left and slightly up or somewhat to the rear...I don't feel handicapped using the POVs, but it breaks down the immersion quite a bit. It's not essential but just better. On the point of feedback. For me, it not just tells me precisely where I'm looking, but it also allows some negative types of feedback that create illusions such as autokinesis. I know most people that have tried it out in my home mention the strange sensations they get in the pit of their stomach when used for the first time. :)One major drawback is when you want to click on something in a VC. Then the POV wins because it can be a PITA to hold your head steady while trying to a dial a frequency.
March 27, 201214 yr One major drawback is when you want to click on something in a VC. Then the POV wins because it can be a PITA to hold your head steady while trying to a dial a frequency.Indeed. For this reason I alway have the " pause track ir" funtion assigned to a joystick button in easy reach - when I need to do so I look at the item I need to click on - lean forward if necessary to zoom into it more, then hit the pause button on my stick, make the change, the quickly unpause it. Sounds like a lot, but once used to doing it , it really is not and is very quick to do.Two essential commands I always have programmed on my stick for using Track IR - the pause command, and the recenter command. One thing I was really concerned about those years ago when I purchased my first one - I get motion sickness very easily, in fact to this day really cannot play FPS games due to this - after about 30 minutes I am very sick to my stomach. I was afraid I would not be able to use the TIR device due to this, and was pleased to find out it did not bother me in the least... Don B
