FS9 - Constant FPS stutter/lag

Featured Replies

One tweak I found to solve most of my stutters involved the terrain.cfg - not fs9.cfg. Right at the top it says Default_texture_count = 238 and autogen_count = 14. Set both these numbers to the LAST real number (the number written for each entry eg) you find in your terrain.cfg for textures and autogen eg Default_texture_count = 1264, autogen_count = 18. Also fixed road and rail display issues.

In your fs9.cfg set the fps where the sim will select a lower LOD to something low. I'm at the office so can't say what the line reads but I think it is at the end of the graphics section. Search for LOD, there are very few entries. Default is 16 fps I think.

Thanks for reply, maybe you mean:

LOD_TARGET_FPS=21

I set this parameter and the others at the top of terrain.cfg, but have no change.

I see that have this issue only with Maddog, all others aircraft are smooth, maybe it's an aircraft related issue.

LOD_TARGET_FPS=21

Yes, that's the one. I think it resets each time you quit FS, though.

Terrain.cfg entries should not have understrokes, sorry.

[General]

DefaultTextureCount=1261

AutogenCount=70

// texture order = wi,hw,sp,su,fa,nighttexture

You have limited your FPS to 30, haven't you? If I remember correctly, this LOD_TARGET_FPS is coupled with the FPS limiter and sets itself to 7/10th of your FPS limit. If you want a lower LOD_TARGET_FPS, you have to lower your FPS or to set them to unlimited. In this latter mode - which I preferred if it wouldn't cause these annoying sound glitches when FPS go above 100 - that value obviously doesn't work.

Yes Herald I locked fsp to 30.

Sorry but I didn't understand what you mean, cna you make an example?

Of course.

LOD_TARGET_FPS defines, at which FPS (or better: below which FPS) FS2004 selects a lower LOD to improve performance. For instance with LOD_TARGET_FPS=21, FS2004 will for instance blurry textures as soon as your FPS go below 21 for a while.

LOD_TARGET_FPS is connected with your FPS limit:

If you limit your FPS to 30, LOD_TARGET_FPS will have the value 21.

If you limit your FPS to 60, LOD_TARGET_FPS will have the value 42.

There's only one possibility to circumvent this connection: Set your FPS to unlimited, and you should be able to insert any value for LOD_TARGET_FPS.

This may lead to problems. In my case, I get far beyond 100 FPS over standard terrain, but only 30-40 FPs at big airports with a lot of AI traffic and heavy weather. That means:

- ideally, I should not limit my FPS for most fluently simming experience, but set the LOD_TARGET_FPS to a low value of, lets say, 15 or 20. But then I get sound glitches: stuttering or fading engine sounds. Some other simmers reported this, too.

- If I limit FPS to 60 according to my screen frequency, LOD_TARGET_FPS is likely to high to keep the best LOD at all circumstances

- So I have to limit FPS to 30 to have a LOD_TARGET_FPS low enough to keep a good LOD even at complex scenery and AI traffic. But with FPS limited to 30 I get a certain stuttering especially when panning around in spot view.

I hope this helps.

Harald

Thank you very much for your explanation, very clear. But as stated above I noted this lag only with maddog, with others aircraft FS2004 is smooth without lag. Maybe this bird is very very heavy on fps.
