April 3, 201214 yr I have just been flying free flight from Honolulu (PHNL). Was rather lonely as usual, so I logged into LiveATC honolulu tower and what a difference! I almost felt like I was part of the traffic. If we can have ghost passengers why not ghost traffic. With a bit of imagination it becomes an interesting experience. I also set real time and the wind direction and speed were identical. Just a coincidence I know. Jak

April 3, 201214 yr I have the LiveATC app on my iPhone and have it on in the background while flying, its great!
April 4, 201214 yr Great post Jac. The overall immersive level just went up 50% on a nurse/patient flight from the big island to PHNL. Even got to hear the tower spank someone for misuse of the radio. Regards, Jerry Gamertag: N60JC
April 4, 201214 yr fantastic, I just go the app. Thanks!! www.stratoart.com Fine Art by Dale Jackson "Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings..." High Flight by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
April 4, 201214 yr I might have to try it, although the communication that we use during MP is very similar to what "Real ATC" sounds like. I wonder if Microsoft will place some traffic in one of the future updates. Might bring a challenge to the flight if we have to line up with AI as well as other players. Circle in pattern waiting on clearence to land. I would like to finally use the transponders on the planes. :) "Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it."
April 4, 201214 yr LiveATC.net Thanx a lot for this. Don't had idea about something like that. Already bought app for my android :). Also pretty nice with watching live air trraffic online around selected airport.
April 4, 201214 yr It's cool to have both liveATC and "Flightaware" live tracking going at the same time, at PHNL.
April 4, 201214 yr Here's a cool one too http://planefinder.net/ Seems to find even more planes than the flightradar24 one. And this is neat too: http://hint.fm/wind/ Track the wind. www.stratoart.com Fine Art by Dale Jackson "Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings..." April 4, 201214 yr Can someone tell me how ATC works in a flight sim? I cannot understand how it would even work except to fill dead air/noise. Does it take game data and know where you are and what altitude you are at as well as other players/A.I Traffic? Also, Does it really interact with your voice? Such as voice commands(meaning you have to say certain key words for it to respond properly)? I know flight does not have it, but when it does(guessing it will sometime), how does it work exactly?

Well, it's all in how deep you want to make this a simulator type environment. It could be just as simple as assigning you a transponder number and "tracking" you in the small Hawaii map. If would then be up to you to communicate as best as you want. It could be more in depth so as you enter or exit "circles" of airspace the tower will follow you and give you a set of text options to pick from to "announce" your intentions. I doubt that it will be voice activated as people from all over will be logging into this game speaking different languages. But it is 2012.... In complex flight simulators (as FSX and X-Plane 10) you have, in controlled airports, several frequencies corresponding to the various functions (clearance, ground, tower, ATIS) of an ATC. Obviously this is also related to the presence of AI planes. The program calculates the traffic around the airport, and give you and the other AI planes the instructions to allow an ordered traffic flow. There are differences between FSX and XP-10, for example in FSX the passage to the various frequency is automated, while in XP-10 you have to manually select them on the onboard radio. Just an example: - you are starting from a ramp. - you can first tune to the ATIS to have the general information. - then tune to the Clearance to have permission, and you MUST give readback - Then tune to the Ground, and the operator give you the instruction to taxi toward the runway (selected by the ATC) for start. You MUST give readback - Then tune to the Tower, for the final permission to take-off from the selected runway. You MUST give readback. -Similar things for landing, from the approach to the final parking. In my opinion it is really an important feature in a flight simulator, and surely is much more immersive than simply listen to real world ATC, not related to your flight, as some of the applications mentioned in this thread do.
