Using mouse control for setting elevator trim (some sort of AP mode)

Featured Replies

Anyone else here who is using the mouse control option to set the elevator trim on the Maule or RV6? No matter what I do, the Maule and RV6 are hard, if not impossible, to trim. I constantly climb or descent when I use the knobs on my joystick or the keyboard shortcuts. So what I am doing now is as soon as I need to set a certain trim (for climb or cruise) I switch to mouse control mode, make sure I am flying at the angle I want and then disable mouse control again. This way I can at least cruise for a while without having to touch my controls... (I use a Logitech 3D Pro joystick and Saitek Combat rudder pedals.)

Mouse control almost feels like some sort of AP (vor VNAV) this way. I'd rather trim the plane manually but even removing the repeat lines from the xml don't seem to do the job very well.

Anyone else here who used the same method (or cheat, if you want to call it that)?

I don't have any trouble trimming the RV at all. The Maule is tougher, but I can get it to hold altitude fairly well... it just seems to always want to roll off to one side or the other, even with no measurable wind.

I configured two buttons on my G940 to send the trim keyboard commands, so I'm effectively trimming via keyboard.

Pretty much the same here.

I can get the Maule really close, but it always ends up in either a very slight descent or very slight ascent, I end up bumping the pitch trim a notch either way occasionally to keep it close to my desired cruise altitude.

I find the Maule tends to want to roll slightly to the left during a climb, once at cruise with flaps set to -7 , and prop rpm and mixture adjusted accordingly, it stays pretty true for me as long as the winds are light to non existant.

Dumb question please... Where is the elevator trim wheel in the the RV6? I see the indicator on the lower left dash, but not the adjusting wheel.

Yes, it's the non-functional buttons on top of the stick.

It's a pity the RV6 doesn't have little things like actually working trim and I also miss the parking brake. I know Shift-X is the parking brake, but it's not the same as using the brake like in the Maule, where you actually can set it by clicking on it.

BTW About not being able to trim: of course the last update also added the repeat lines again to my xml... Duh... I removed them again and trimming is better now...
