April 20, 201214 yr In these days I am evaluating a second hand purchase of a EVGA GTX580 SC worthing about Euro 270. What do you think about it? I say that is a good price for an awesome card. But I would hold off maybe just a bit, till the end of the month, since by them we will maybe have an idea what a Z77 + IB + 680 is doing for FSX.
April 21, 201214 yr Word Not Allowed, Sometimes you seem to come across a little abrasive with your posts but your content is usually informative, accurate and the information provided is done so with the express intent to help us all with our own FS experience. Many of your posts have certainly provided me with solutions to issues that I have exprienced with FSX performance. Bad luck if some people are disappointed, I with many others are not. Hey Word Not Allowed- I've followed your posts and you have saved me A TON of experimenting. Most of us don't know a graphics card from a birthday card. The subject matter is as technically deep as it gets and applying your advice, learned from trial and error and based on a lot of study, is really a leap of faith for most of us. I don't have a clue about the underpinnings of good graphics performance but I know from following your posts that you are passionate about your advice and that's good enough for me. Please keep it up! Rick Bertz
April 21, 201214 yr What is actually the real difference in terms of hardware specifications between a GTX560Ti and a GTX580? For example, GTX580 has a more bandwidth but its core clock is less than a GTX560Ti. And, is it sure that with a GTX580 I can get more fps compared with a GTX560Ti, being FSX a CPU oriented game? April 21, 201214 yr Word Not Allowed I know the post was from a week ago already but this is just what I meant, i didn't say I don't agree with you, cuz infact I DO agree! GTX 560Ti vs GTX 580 with FSX default AA and filtering: 0 FPS increase, nothing, nada. I tested this. GTX 560Ti vs GTX 580 with high AA and (SG)SS levels: around 25% performance increase as far as I've seen. So conclusion: If you don't care too much about AA and (SG)SS, get the GTX 560Ti. If you want to run decent levels of AA and (SG)SS to eliminate stairsteps, jaggies and shimmering, then a GTX 580 is no doubt the way to go. It just depends on what you need. Maybe you don't care too much about image quality, and care more about performance? It''s all up to you. Arjen Vandervelde

I was waiting for someone who tested a GTX560Ti and a GTX580 in FSX. I need to use a 2x SGSS to fix (at about 98%) annoying shimmering but it comes with a performance drop and with some stutters at the airport. So using a GTX580 makes a real difference in terms of fps? What are Inspector settings you have? I was always a little bit unsure about the advantage of using a high-end GPU in FSX, because about 80% of its performance and graphics rendering is due to CPU and only 20% coming from GPU. So, I was telling myself: "How a GTX580 or an another powerful high-end card take an advantage if the GPU does only a little part of the entire job?" Capt. April 21, 201214 yr Thanks for your valuable opinions! Well, I'm considering buying a new PC (which I mainly use for a job), so that's gonna be i7-3820 with a) cheap cooling and GTX 580 or B) nice watercooling and GTX 560i. Honestly, I feel I'd go with 560Ti, just because I do not play anything else but flighsim once a month, and paying about eur200 more for almost 0 FPS and slightly higher AA settings is not for me Sorry to say that.... But you gonna buy a 400$ CPU + 400$ GFX card but dont have 50 more bucks for a descent air cooler like Noctua? Christian Pfeffer
April 21, 201214 yr So using a GTX580 makes a real difference in terms of fps? What are Inspector settings you have? Yes, if you run higher levels of IQ. For shimmering elimination, you need that, thus you need 580. Actually... you don't need it, you don't even need a computer, but you'll want it when performance starts suffering.
April 22, 201214 yr Spend the money! I had 800 buckss budgeted for my FSX computer and I ended up spending 1650. Just something your going to have to do. Get the 580, I wish I had but then I would have spent 2200. Oh and as far as air goes. I am at 4.8 ghz/1.430volts and am only hitting 66 in FSX tops on a warm day. I have plenty of headroom for higher so water cooling is a waste in my opinion, you just have to get lucky with your pick off the shelf. Close your eyes and spin around 5 times and then reach your arm out and you will be fine. I also notice a 3 fps average increase per .1ghz of clockspeed which is a pretty good return in the heaviest hit areas. When you only getting 16 in the worst areas and times then 19 is huge. I think when I upgrade it will be the 580 and not 560ti just because in my opinion a little bit extra goes along way if you can get rid of those shimmers. Marc Lynn
April 22, 201214 yr Actually... you don't need it, you don't even need a computer, but you'll want it when performance starts suffering. :LMAO:
